Mel's Message

A message from Mel Hall our head of service at the start of a new month:

Welcome to August's newsletter.

I have had the pleasure of line managing the community connectors to support Rebecca while she is off. The connectors, like all of us, have been reviewing the role against their evidence base for the work they do. Each of the connectors shared with me their views of the Martin Webber research and blog which you can find here. The connector role is one which was greatly reshaped during the Pandemic, due to the closure of groups and stopping face to face contact which is the one of the main purposes of their role. Now with the support of their returning manager and the guidance of Emma Wardle through professional supervision, the connectors are reshaping the work they do in communities.

The work of the connectors is to understand and redefine their scope of work against their evidence base as it is replicated across the whole of our service. As we continue to build up from the effects of the pandemic and reconnect with our evidence bases, it is important to remember what work we have done to get the service into place. We shall once again ask the evaluation team to come to the whole team meeting to share their findings. We know that time does not stand still and we need to continue to refine and adapt what we deliver. It is therefore key to remember our evidence bases that we use to inform and guide our practice.

Also remembering our ambition:

A Responsive Mental Health Service That Help To Reduce Mental Health Inequalities And Delivered Care Close To Where People Live
Congratulations Janet!

Congratulations are in order as we celebrate Janet Suggit, who has secured the post of Clinical Lead for the PCMHT! If you haven't already, please take the time to send Janet a congratulatory email.

Well done from all of the team, Janet!
PCS and PCMH Rounders

Get your bat and ball ready team, because on the 17th of September, Rounders will be taking place! Where, you ask?

Frecheville Cricket Club, Silkstone Road, S12 4RL.

We will be getting a PCMH team together to compete with GPs, other clinical staff and senior managers from PCS - all staff are welcome.

So if you would like to have a day of fun, team building, refreshments and friendly competition, please contact Jodie at jodie.hall1@nhs.net to secure your place.

We would also like to take the time to highlight how important it is to socialise and mingle with your team at work. There are strong links between workplace loneliness and poor mental health, so ensuring you feel part of a team is essential.

If you would like to read more on workplace loneliness and what steps can be taken to reduce this, please follow the link below.

COMPLIMENTS!

Every month we showcase our compliments for our fabulous team.

One of our amazing MHP's, Nathan Hartley, has received a thank you card from a patient for the work he has carried out with them.

Well done, Nathan!

Supporting Employee Mental Wellbeing

We know that poor mental health accounts for 20% of all absences in the NHS.
Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 people who deal with mental health problems endure stigma and discrimination as a result.

Within the NHS, people can experience moral stress within their jobs which can in turn lead to moral injury. But what is Moral Injury?

Moral injury is reoccurring psychological distress which results from actions, or the lack of them, which strongly clash with a person’s moral or ethical code. It can occur if staff feel they have done something they should not have done; did not do something they should have; or were betrayed by others (often a higher authority).

It is important if you are feeling this way to know you are not alone, and as an organisation we are here to support you through any mental distress you are experiencing.

There are a few ways in which we can support you:

raising awareness and educating staff having the right resources in place to encourage
conversations, beating the stigma about mental health
  • Raising the profile of moral injury in our organisation by including information about what it is on the staff intranet, notice boards and staff areas. We can ensure details are available on how staff can access this support.
  • Raise at board level to agree the approach to supporting staff with moral injury.
  • Through signposting to your existing health and wellbeing offers.
  • The most effective way at present to support our staff who are dealing with moral injury, is to help them make sense of what has happened to them. Accessing psychological support is the best way to do this.
If you do have any concerns or need support with moral injury, please remember to use you line management, clinical supervision and join group supervisions to help work through any issues associated with moral injury.
PCMHT Winter Away Day

Yes that's right... we are having ANOTHER  Team Away Day!

As you all know we had a summer Away Day to Manver's Lake that took place in June, and following on from the success of this, we have decided to have another.

This Team Away Day will take place on the 3rd of November, with activities and a venue to be confirmed... keep your eyes on this space!

Annual SMI Physical Health Checks

Please read the article below for information on our growing SMI service:

We now have 4 health coaches in the team: Ambah, Lydia, Joanne and Sylvia. They are working on rotation into PCNs around the city. Currently they are working into Foundry and GPA 1.

So far this year they have completed an impressive 385 full annual health checks. They identify any health concerns and make care plans and arrange follow up intervention accordingly. In addition to this, they have supported clients with booking cancer screenings, engaged clients in discussions around healthier lifestyles and signposted them into other relevant services.

The feedback from GPs and patients is so far very positive and we are excited to continue to work on developing the service further.

Some of the current GP feedback:

“Thank you for helping with our SMI register, all SMI figures have decreased, your team saw a lot of complex patients in a short space of time. Your support is very much appreciated. Ambah has been talking with colleagues at different points which was great as it showed a consideration for how our practice does things.”

“Worked well as part of the Practice Team, patients were able to be seen much sooner given current/ongoing access constraints, We would welcome the service back if it was offered again in the future. Engaged patients difficult to engage.”

“Excellent service manged to complete most of our SMI patients including a very complex patient who will not engage with the practice. The only patients remaining are none compliant patients.”

What a great service being completed by the health coaches and managed by Jodie. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Save the Date - The Service User and Public Event

On the 26th of September there will be a Service User and Public Event taking place at the Circle in Sheffield.

This event is for service users, so please ensure you promote the date to your patients.

Look out for an EventBrite invite which will be circulated closer to the time... more detail can be found via Health watch Sheffield or Rethink Sheffield.
