Australian Championships - Last Week to Enter

Entries close for all events of the 2022 Australian Championship Carnival on August 31st although there will be Entry on the Day for Non-championship classes. It is shaping as a really fun carnival and the Central Highlands are looking sparkling with Wattles in full bloom, lambs playing in the paddocks and dams filled to the brim.  I checked out the arena for the Orienteering Grand Prix today and I can see why Warren is excited.  We are all looking forward to running three championships on three new maps and the Mid-week events are in great locations in classic terrain. There are also a range of other parts of the carnival where you can sign up in Eventor. The extra services include the related Merchandise (aka T shirts), sportident hire (great insurance for those who live in fear that their stick will run out of puff at the wrong time) and split starts for parents and those who want some “me time”. There are also three additional “events” that many will enjoy such as the carnival dinner on the Saturday night of the second weekend at a traditional country pub at Campbells Creek located close to both weekend events.  There is a mapping meeting to sign up for on Thursday 29th with an IOF guest and acronyms galore. For those staying in Victoria, there are a further three races that make up the Melbourne City Race Weekend on October 8 and 9. Even those who have entered the main events may have missed these “icing on the cake extras” so the details are below:

  • Request Split Start Times for Childminding – click here; closes 31 August
  • Hire a Sportident Stick – click here; closes 31 August
  • Order a Carnival T-Shirtclick here (illustration and sizing charts available); closes 31 August
  • Attend the Mapping Meeting on Thu September 29 – click here; closes 25 September
  • Book a place at the Carnival Dinner on Sat October 1 – click here; closes 28 September
  • Enter the Melbourne City Race Weekend, October 8 and 9 – click here for more information and online entry

So enter now as the organisers don’t want any of those “but I only just missed the deadline” type conversations!

Oceania 2023 Update

It is now just under 5 months to the start of the 2023 Oceania Championships next January. Preparations are proceeding apace. The IOF Senior Event Adviser, Paul Prudhoe, has visited and is very happy with progress, the quality of the terrain and course planning.

Two new terrains are on offer for both the Middle Distance and Long Distance Championship races featuring classic East Coast Tasmania terrain of granite and tin mining for your enjoyment mapped by the late Rob Plowright.

Enter prior to midnight of September 30 and go into a draw to receive a full refund of your entry to Oceania 2023.

Go to the Oceania 2023 Eventor pages to enter. Bookmark the Oceania website and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with all the news and event information.

Don’t forget to book your travel and accommodation soon as January is a popular holiday time on the beautiful East Coast of Tasmania. What a great way to kick off your 2023 orienteering!

This session is for girls and boys, kids and adults (kids must be accompanied by an adult).
Bring a bike and your helmet, we will have maps boards for you to trial.

Email marina.iskhakova@gmail.com for more information or simply message “Count me in” so we know who/how many to expect.

Computer Operator Sought

Expressions of interest are sought for the position of computer operator for our regular community orienteering events starting with the Runners Shop Twilight Series from October 2022.

This is a paid position and would suit a friendly outgoing person who can attend all of the Wednesday Runners Shop Twilight Series events. You will have the opportunity to take part in all the events if you wish.

Time required is approximately 3 hours per week, with the expectation that the person can arrive at the event and have the computer set up at least 15 minutes before the first start and able to be transport a small amount of equipment to and from the event

Please contact Phil Walker (jillphil1@bigpond.com) for details. After several seasons looking after our events computer, Cameron Nulty will not be seeking an extension of his contract past the end of the current metro season. Many thanks to Cameron for putting up with us all week after week!

Development Officer Appointment

OACT is pleased to announce that Toni Brown will take on the role of Development Officer for the association with effect from 1 September 2022. Toni has been a passionate advocate for our sport for many years and has already been instrumental in launching numerous development opportunities for up-and-coming orienteers. Executive Officer Appointment

OACT is pleased to announce that Phil Walker will take on the role of Executive Officer for the association with effect from 1 September 2022. Phil brings a wealth of experience to the role, most recently following his three-year term as OACT President. The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing EO, Geoff Wood, for his years of tireless service in the role.
