Congratulations to everyone who has been shortlisted for an AHSN Network Innovate Award!
Finalists include Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust in the Net Zero Innovation of the Year category for its open-source Context of Vehicle Emissions (COVE) tool, which gives accurate transport emissions and critical insights.
Hexitime CIC has been shortlisted in the Innovation Spread Award category. Hexitime is a collaboration platform and timebank for improving health and care services, and has been supported by KSS AHSN since 2018. You can learn more about Hexitime in this video.

New Patient Safety Incident Response Framework launches
The Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) has been published by NHS England as a major piece of guidance on how NHS organisations respond to patient safety incidents and ensure compassionate engagement with those affected.
The framework replaces the existing Serious Incident Framework and supports the key principles of a patient safety culture, focusing on understanding how incidents happen, rather than apportioning blame, allowing for more effective learning, and ultimately safer care for patients.
The transition will be supported in the region by the AHSN's Patient Safety Collaborative. A range of resources to support organisations with this process are available on the NHS England website. You can also register for their Implementing the new Patient Safety Incident Response Framework webinar, which is taking place on 5 September.

South East Patient Safety Specialists conference
 The AHSN’s Patient Safety Collaborative held its first conference bringing together Patient Safety Specialists from across the South East, with funding awarded from Q and the Health Foundation. Over 60 people attended the event in July, to meet, share experiences, and increase their collective understanding of the role and the scope of what can be achieved together.
Helen Davenport, Clinical Quality Director, NHS England South East, said:
“This was a terrific environment, where our Chief Nurse Acosia Nyanin discussed the importance of the Patient Safety Specialist role and how we must exercise our influence to support the entire patient safety agenda. Alice Parr reminded the specialists of the importance of ‘Our Circle of Influence’ and immersed us in the world of Civility Saves Lives.
“Helené Donnelly OBE, with great courage, relived her personal experience and brought the conference to an emotional standing ovation. We are truly grateful to you for bringing the voices of patients, families and staff to our conference. Tracey Herlihey from the national team, and Richard Young and Lucie Caroll from the Isle of Wight discussed the new Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), while Melanie Ottewill supported us with a better understanding of the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch. Delegates certainly felt much less daunted.
“A big shout out to Ursula Clarke and her patient safety team for bringing welcome humour and kindness to the conference, and to Nuala Foley for sharing invaluable information about Kent Surrey Sussex AHSN that all Patient Safety Specialists can use. Learning event for cardiology and radiology teams
KSS AHSN is holding a South East regional event for cardiology and radiology teams, and commissioners, to explore the benefits of HeartFlow. This is an exciting new imaging tool, that allows for a visualisation of Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) from a CT scan, avoiding surgery for up to 1/3 of eligible cardiac patients.

Could you be a Core20PLUS5 ambassador?
As part of the Core20PLUS5 approach, the National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme is seeking ambassadors to promote the importance of reducing healthcare inequalities.
The programme is a one-year voluntary opportunity for NHS staff with a record of improving healthcare inequalities. You will have opportunities to form a community of practice, increase your impact and influence, and develop your knowledge of and leadership in the healthcare inequalities improvement field.
The scheme aims to have two representatives who work for the NHS within every ICS. They are especially keen to hear from those working within the Kent and Medway and Surrey Heartlands areas to ensure good representation across the South East.

Applications for the NHS Innovation Accelerator are now open!
The NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) is an NHS England initiative supported by Academic Health Science Networks. It's latest call for fellows has just launched and is open to local, national and international healthcare innovations, supported by passionate individuals from any background, including SMEs, clinicians, charity/third sector and academics.
For the 2023 intake, the NIA is seeking innovations that align with the NHS Core20PLUS5 manifesto while addressing key theme areas of elective recovery and operational challenges post-pandemic.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate how their innovation actively alleviates health inequalities in practice. Applications close on 28 October 2022. Net Zero: NHS Clinical Innovation Competition
The latest funding competition from the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) is open for innovators who can help to transform carbon intensive areas of clinical care and complex care pathways, and help the NHS meet its net zero ambitions.
The competition is a collaboration between the Accelerated Access Collaborative, the AHSN Network, and Greener NHS, and will provide up to a £1m in funding. Specifically, innovations should address the following challenges:
- Decarbonising surgical pathways.
- Reducing waste in surgery and critical care.
- Providing personalised care that supports the NHS to reach net zero.
- Developing tools to support the workforce to move to a greener NHS.

Neuroscience Bootcamp

A two-day Neuroscience bootcamp will be taking place at Discovery Park on 6 and 7 September 2022.
At the bootcamp you will learn how to translate your idea into a viable commercial opportunity (licensing, partnering or spin-out). They are particularly keen to hear from (but not limited to) academic projects located in the Kent and South East region.

Bridging the Gap

The next in the AHSN Network’s Bridging the Gap series brings together innovators from the SME sector and the key decision-makers in the health and care system who can support them.
The event is free to attend and features keynote speakers, panel discussions and one-to-one sessions. It aims to help healthtech companies better understand how the AHSN Network and regional partners can support them in scaling up products and services that have already had an impact on the system.

Environmental Sustainability in Health Workshop

Taking place on Thursday 20 October 2022 at 10am, the Environmental Sustainability in Health workshop aims to educate innovators on the growing importance of the climate crisis, and what they need to know over the coming years. It will look at how climate change is impacting the NHS, and how the NHS is impacting our climate, and breakdown the NHS’s approach to sustainability and sustainable procurement over the next decade.
Additionally, a variety of resources will be provided to support innovators on their sustainability journey. Des Holden (KSS Chief Executive) is chairing a session on Health and Social Care priorities: Inequalities and sustainability and Amelia James (KSS Oxon Sustainability Lead) is one of the panellists.
