Friends —

Marcel the Shell has come to the State— with enough fun and heart for the whole family! If you keep an eye out, you may even find some of Marcel's family hiding around the State Theatre this weekend.

State Theater: Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm
Monday (Labor Day): 1pm and 4pm

After its international internet success, Jenny Slate's pint-sized creation finally makes it to the silver screen. When filmmaker Dean moves into his new Airbnb, he finds something unexpected —Marcel, a plucky one-inch shell wearing

shoes. Along with Dean, we enter Marcel's world, his relationships, and his search for his long-lost family. With a little bit of courage and help from his newfound friends, "Marcel is the Hero we need right now," writes Shirley Li of The Atlantic. I wholeheartedly agree.

Honestly, I probably never would have watched this movie, and yet it is one of the best things I’ve seen this year. There’s nothing else like it. Would it be enough for you to give it a try if I just said “I think you should give this a try!”? You don’t really even need to know what it’s about. Yes, I gave you a basic description above, but that doesn’t really do it justice.

Or let me put it another way. What if I were to tell you that there was a movie I really, really wanted to bring to the film festival this summer but I just couldn’t get it in time? It’s like there was this final piece of a beautiful mosaic which was this year’s TCFF, and now here it is — “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.”

Once again, when it comes to me asking you to go on a little adventure inside a movie theater, this is one you won’t regret. Something new, fresh, different, exhilarating. Something that after months or years of struggle and stress and wondering what has happened to this life, to this world, here for a moment we remember what it’s like for our heart to sing, for our soul to hope one more time that it IS all worth it, even in the midst of the daily chaos, the occasional despair, a ray of light creeps in and a little shell of life gives us the smile that we need. That’s a lot to ask of a movie. Sometimes we should. And often it does, with bells and shoes on.

Come see our beautiful little movie this holiday weekend.

Starring the voices of Jenny Slate, Nathan Fielder, and Isabella Rossellini.

Much love,
Michael Moore
