Centering Prayer Update

Our Centering Prayer Ministry is a small ecumenical group meeting weekly to study Christian mysticism and practice contemplative methods of prayer, primarily using the Centering Prayer method as taught by Fr. Thomas Keating OCSO and The Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, an Episcopal priest.

After first gathering for a few minutes we practice our 20 minutes of silent Centering Prayer. Following the practice we will be reading and discussing a passage from Evelyn Underhill, a modern spiritual writer. We’ll be using Grace Through Simplicity, an edited collection of her prayers and reflections. Here is a taste of what she has to say to us:

“Try to arrange things so that you can have a reasonable bit of quiet every day and do not...think it selfish...You are obeying God's call and giving Him [sic] the opportunity to teach you what He wants you to know, and so make you more useful to Him and to other souls.“

“Remember God is acting on your soul all the time, whether you have spiritual sensations or not.”

We meet EVERY Friday from 4 to 5pm using ZOOM:

Dinner Night Out TONIGHT

We're excited to be meeting again this Thursday for another 'Dinner Night Out' at the Village Grill in Arroyo Grande. Our speaker will be Dr. Hisham Hassal, professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Cal Poly. Dr. Hassal is involved with many interfaith activities. He represents the Muslim faith in a group called "Opening Doors For Interfaith Understanding," and will share his insights with us on worship and spiritual practices.

Plan to meet at the restaurant at 5:30 pm, order some food and we'll sit up on the raised patio together. Dr. Hassal will speak at 6:00 pm, followed by Q and A. Looking forward to seeing you there.

We are in the process of updating our website. Here's a sneak peak at the some of the initial design. It will hopefully be a clear and welcoming change, with minimal disruption. Our goal is to help provide clear information and a welcoming face for new folks looking for a new church community home. In addition, we want our website to be a useful resource for you all who to access the resources and information most helpful for you. We're still a little ways off from making the switch, but wanted to give you a heads up that it's on the way!

Flower and Candle Dedications

Candles are lighted by St. Barnabas to the Glory of God.

The flowers have been placed on the altar by Shirley Holgate in loving memory of her husband Tom; by David and Tricia Ottesen in celebration of their son Chris’ birthday.

Please sign up for an open slot to host a coffee hour in the following weeks - there is a clipboard on the ushers table in the Narthex. There are openings after the 10 am service available. Contact the church office if you have questions to be answered by the Kitchen and Hospitality team.

Thank you to last week's hosts!
