Dear friends,

What a time to be alive!

My heart is still full from last Sunday’s service and celebration. The presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable as we celebrated and reminisced; we met new friends and connected with old friends we haven’t seen in a while. There’s just something about coming together over a meal that helps us trace the contours of our lives: the story of the job you love that came about from a chance encounter with a gathering of friends; the moments spent with mentors and church family that changed the trajectory of your life; and well, [fill in the blanks with your own story].

Coming together as the body of Christ can be a powerful thing! In fact, there are two saints of the Church remembered together this Sunday whose lives and witness speak to the power of the Holy Spirit working in community to change lives:
Augustine of Hippo and the swashbuckler turned saint, Abba Moses the Ethiopian. For both individuals, it was in Christian communities, like LMC, where the course of their lives changed drastically… and for the better. In fact, Augustine’s tell-all autobiography, The Confessions, rings as true today—about the struggles of life and finding God’s grace and redemption through community—as when it was first written (in the last days of the fourth century CE). In fact, it was Augustine’s understanding of God’s salvation and grace that greatly influenced a young monk turned reformer—Martin Luther.

And so we give thanks… to Augustine and Abba Moses and Martin Luther and LMC! We give thanks for the work of the Holy Spirit in this congregation and community. And we give thanks for you!

So as we come together as the hands and feet and voices of Christ in the world… welcome home. Welcome to the place where the Holy Spirit works in and for and through us. Welcome to the safe space that allows us to grow and be nurtured and to become our better selves… together. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Peace,
Christopher

Streaming Note

We have had some technical difficulties with our streaming setup. We're working on a fix, but in the meantime, Pastor Lindsay will record her sermons and upload them to our YouTube page, and we will also try to record the whole Sunday worship service and upload that as well.

COVID Safety

LMC is committed to the safety and wellbeing of those who attend worship. Given the rise in COVID cases and the contagiousness of current COVID strains, we encourage anyone who attends worship to consider using N95 or KN95 masks. We will provide masks for those who do not have them. The city of Chicago COVID advisory level is currently MEDIUM. When the city moves the advisory level back to LOW, we will invite everyone to be mask optional in the sanctuary.

LMC is hiring!

We are looking to add on a Nursery Attendant as Bernadette prepares for parental leave and an Intern, Youth and Family Ministry! If you have any questions, please reach out to Sarah

"Pick-up Choir" on Sunday, August 28

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to sing in the choir, or if you're a more experienced singer wanting to share your gift of music in harmony... now's your chance! Everyone is welcome. We'll gather at 9:15am that Sunday morning to rehearse a piece that we'll then sing at the 10am service. Email for more details, or talk to Christopher after Sunday's service.

Bernadette's Baby Shower

Bernadette is having a baby! Please join us to shower Bernadette on Sunday, August 28. Light refreshments will be provided. See her registry here.

Rally Day 2022

Join us for Rally Day on Sunday, September 11! We will gather for worship at 10am and then enjoy a block party. We’ll have fun activities for the kids. Lunch will involve both a ribfest and a potluck. We have a great line-up of rib cookers ready to go, but could always use a couple more. If you are up for cooking ribs, reach out to Melissa Busch. Accompanying our ribs will be a potluck of sides and desserts. Have a favorite dish from childhood potlucks or a cultural dish you’d love to share? Sign up here!

Prayer Chain

If you have a request for prayers, please send a confidential email to the office to be added to the prayer chain.
