You May Be Able to Pay Less for Internet Access or Even Get it Free

Internet access is necessary for work, school, healthcare, and more. Unfortunately, high speed internet remains unaffordable for too many households. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) runs a program, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), that reduces the cost of getting online for people with limited income. Many internet providers offer fully covered internet plans – meaning you may even get high-speed internet for free.

If your household income is 200% or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines or someone in your household participates in certain government assistance programs, you may be eligible for the benefits the ACP provides. Visit the ACP website to see if you qualify. Please do not contact Social Security with questions about the ACP.

You can take advantage of the discounts with confidence knowing that receiving ACP assistance does not affect your Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits.

What discounts are available?

  • $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households. Some companies offer internet service for $30, making internet service free.

  • $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands.

  • Eligible households also can receive a one-time discount of up to $100 toward purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers.

How do you get the discounts?

You can apply online with the FCC, directly contacting your current internet service provider, or by mail.

5 Benefits of Ignoring Your Child

"Can I have a snack bar?" my daughter asked as I measured the rice and poured it into the pot. "No, dinner's coming," I said. "Just hang on." I put the recipe on the counter and reviewed the list of ingredients. My daughter called from the kitchen table. "But I'm so hungry! Please?" I ignored her, snipping the chicken thighs into a bowl. I've already given her my answer, I thought. A minute passed and I took a peek over my shoulder. She'd returned to her book, the snack bar seemingly forgotten.

You might think ignoring your children is a bad thing. But sometimes, when you give a child a response, you might inadvertently reinforce the behavior you don't want. By selectively ignoring frustrating and annoying behavior, you can bring a stop to it within a few days. Here are 5 benefits of looking the other way when certain bad behaviors crop up.

Vroom

This #VroomTip can turn a diaper change into a chance to connect: Make different sounds for each part of your baby's face. Touch their nose and say "Your nose says 'beep!'" or "Here's your ear. Pop!" and touch their ear. Let them touch your face.

Taking time in your daily routine to connect with your child supports their learning and encourages curiosity. Plus, when you play with words and sounds together, you build language skills and show them how much fun learning can be!

Selecting Healthy Snacks for Toddlers

Toddlers use a lot of energy to grow and play, and their little stomachs can't hold enough food to keep them from getting hungry between meals. Many young children need both a morning and an afternoon snack. These should be timed so they will still be hungry for lunch and dinner.

Snacks should include a balance of healthy foods. Children often come to think of a "snack" as a time to eat highly processed foods. You can help avoid this trap by serving a variety of freshly prepared foods to your children—even at snack time.

Learn and Play with Water

Enjoying bath time can be hit or miss, but playing with water is a fun activity for most children. Water play is a sensory activity, allowing children to learn through their senses, which can also be a calming process for some children. Water play has a number of opportunities for learning, such as math (learning about volume), science (learning about physics concepts like motion and flowing water, as well as making predictions about whether or not objects will float), language development (learning new vocabulary and playing pretend), and creativity (playing with open-ended materials).

Restful Play: 4 Ways to Have Fun With Your Kids

Active play is great for kids, especially in the summer when they can get outside more. Running around at the local playground, playing catch, hopscotch or jumping rope are just a few examples of ways to have fun while getting the exercise kids need each day. But summer is also a great time to enjoy some rest and relaxation as a family, with a playful spin. Find some ideas to mash up play and rest this summer.

Try to turn off the non-stop to-do list in every parent's brain, and just let go and follow the stream-of-consciousness, non-linear, and outside-the-box thinking that kids' minds do. Sometimes just asking "What if..." questions (the more outlandish, the better) can spark surprising and delightful conversations. Some inspiration:

  • What if a genie granted you three wishes? (Try adding this: And you had to use them to help someone else?)

  • What if you could be an animal for a day? What would you be and do?

  • What if your toys could talk? What would they say?

News and Research

Developmental behavior studies spearheaded by Laura Schulz are changing our notions of how children learn.

Why you should listen

MIT Early Childhood Cognition Lab lead investigator Laura Schulz studies learning in early childhood. Her research bridges computational models of cognitive development and behavioral studies in order to understand the origins of inquiry and discovery.

Working in play labs, children’s museums, and a recently-launched citizen science website, Schultz is reshaping how we view young children’s perceptions of the world around them. Some of the surprising results of her research: before the age of four, children expect hidden causes when events happen probabilistically, use simple experiments to distinguish causal hypotheses, and trade off learning from instruction and exploration.

What others say

"Don't answer your child's questions too quickly or do things for your child. Laura Schulz of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has found that children lose interest more quickly when adults tell them the answers to their questions rather than letting kids continue to explore.

When your daughter asks a question, see if she can figure out the answer by herself, acting like a scientist and conducting an experiment. Or learn together by researching, observing, and exploring. Here's a tip sheet: https://bit.ly/Curiosity_MITM"

Risk and Protection Profiles for Substance Abuse Prevention for Washington State and its Communities (CORE) | Subscription Details

We are pleased to announce the release of the JULY 2022 Community Risk Profiles, a comprehensive collection of social indicators relevant to a broad range of problem behaviors among adolescents and adults, such as substance abuse among youth. A product of the RDA Community Outcome and Risk Evaluation geographic information system (CORE), nearly 50 indicators are presented in graphs, maps and tables which facilitate comparison between communities and over time. The Profiles, comprised of 455 reports, provide annual trends for the last 12 years for Washington, its counties, school districts and locales, and the US as a whole.

NEW THIS TIME:

1. The Excel reports for counties, locales and school districts now contain a single table (a flat file) with all of the values included in the PDF report; they no longer mirror the PDF version of the report. See the tab "NOTES" for variable definitions. The PDF version includes the same presentation-ready layout of charts and tables for each indicator.

2. Population denominators for years 2020 and 2021 are preliminary and subject to change. RDA computed experimental 2020 and 2021 population estimates for CORE reports. See Technical Notes (2nd paragraph from the top, section ATTENTION: DIFFERENT THIS YEAR) for more information.
