Issue 179 - August 2022  View in your browser

We are feeling for members who are calving in the wet conditions which seem to be encompassing all of NZ. At least the days are getting longer.

Autumn sales have been and gone with a mixed result for members. The office is now focusing on the Spring yearling sales marketing campaign. We encourage you to share the short YouTube videos on your Facebook pages and with your clients. There are two videos focused to the beef industry, one talking about the benefits of DNA testing and two targeted to the dairy beef market. I’ll be shortly working with the board to set the budget for 2022/23 and updating the rule book, with the board scheduled to have a zoom board meeting on the 15th and 16th August.

Suzanne will be spending the next couple of months updating the database, so expect either a call or email from her. If your farm has either gone through succession changes or about to, it may be timely to review who is the ‘full’ paying member in the family, so they receive the correct information to accurately record the stud animals. Becoming an Associate member is a great option if you wish to remain part of the Hereford family, receive the magazine and Hooked on Herefords, but not have your inbox cluttered with emails which are no longer relevant to you. It’s also worth clarifying that “Life” membership is assigned to one person and not the stud, so if he or she passes, then someone in the family will be required to join.

The technical committee are meeting next week to further discuss days to calving, the proposition from Beef + Lamb Genetics regarding their multi breed evaluation ‘nProve’ (which you will have read about in the papers), progeny tests and diagnostics. Diagnostic reports are continuing to be challenging with many breeders experiencing samples coded N4 which means they do not have sufficient SNPs to be accepted for the evaluation. One of the reasons may be due to sample failure. Read the link for common reasons for sample failures. Also please get back to Megan when she contacts you regarding animals which are on the diagnostics report. As explained previously, they are animals which have not been accepted for the genomic evaluation, as they have failed the quality control at AGBU.

I am looking forward to Spring and hopefully seeing you at a few sales. Until then please email if you have any questions, suggestions for the magazine or something to say. We like ‘nice’ but ‘bad’ can also be helpful and drive progress!

Cheers

Technical Update
Completeness of Performance

Yearly, ABRI produce a ‘Completeness of Performance’ (COP) summary created by BreedPlan, which, provides a summary of the information which NZ Hereford breeders have submitted to BREEDPLAN.  Your herd report can be found when you access your download files by using the red “On Line Search” drop down box on the NZ Herefords website and log into ILR2.

Some graphs which catch the eye, due to the change of pattern reflecting a change of recording, include Days to Calving and Mature Cow weights. Days to Calving recording was discussed at length in the last Hooked on Herefords and the board is currently in communication with ABRI discussing the importance of having an easier system to record such an imperative trait. The graph clearly depicts the level of DTC recording falling dramatically when BreedPlan changed the approach towards an intentional recording of all joinings. The change in Mature Cow weight can be explained but not easily! It is counting females with a mature weight recorded in the specified year whereas most traits use the calving year of the animal. The reason it’s 100% is because there aren’t a lot of 2022 animals recorded yet. The percentage indicates the females with MCW recorded as a percentage of the calves recorded in that year. As more calves are recorded the % will decrease.

On the last page of the summary titled “Other Traits”, Net Feed Intake and Flight Time are currently traits which are not recorded by NZ Hereford breeders. However, NZH does encourage you to record Docility at weaning time, which includes flight time. NFI is a trait which interests the NZ Herefords board and they will be discussing it at the next meeting. NZ Herefords store and record the DNA with Theta, as opposed to ABRI, so it does not feature in this report.

A big shout out to the three studs which were awarded 5 stars for their recording of data.

Congratulations to the families of; Okawa, Morrison Farming and Wairepo Studs. As we know it takes a team!

Additional Group Run Reminder

All data for the ADDITIONAL September group run is to be submitted to Samantha Brosnahan (samantha@pbbnz.com) by August 28th. Late data cannot be accepted due to the tight turnaround, with results expected by 8th September, at the latest. The standard September group run will take place as per normal. 3rd September is the cut off and results are due around the 20th of the month.
B+LNZ Genetics Progeny Tests

Beef Progeny Test – call for nominations.

B+LNZ Genetics are inviting breeders to nominate bulls for the 2022 mating of their across-breed Beef Progeny Test at Pāmu’s Kepler farm, Te Anau, and a new North Island site – Rimanui Farms’ Lochinver Station, Rangitaiki Plains.

This Progeny Test will be fundamental to a multi-breed evaluation by providing both linkage between breeds and New Zealand collected data to be able to accurately estimate hybrid vigour.

Cattle will be Artificially Inseminated in December 2022 (Kepler) and January 2023 (Lochinver). Angus and Hereford bulls will be used across both breeds of cows.

Nomination - FREE (assistance for semen collection can be requested to NZ Herefords)

Nomination deadline: Monday 22nd August, 2022

Dairy Beef Progeny Test - call for nominations is now closed. Stud breeders will be contacted directly by BLG if they are successful in their nomination. We understand there were approx 13 Hereford bulls nominated out of 42.

Spring sales are fast approaching, so please submit data and any animal changes to us, to be included in the September group runs, by the 28th August or the 3rd September, so it’s ready for your catalogues.

A reminder now that autumn bull sale season is over, to email your transfer forms ASAP in line with the 30 days transfer ruling.

If you are waiting for DNA results, submit the transfer form and leave me a little note to let me know. Transfer forms can be found here https://www.herefords.co.nz/forms.html

Late fees will apply as the transfer rule is one of the most important rules, which was written to protect breeders and guarantee the integrity of the herd book. Please note this applies to female transfers as well.

All the best with calving!
