EAA Chapter 234

Grand Traverse Region

Newsletter—August 2022

From the president

We're moving!

We’ve left our first home in the old GA terminal and have moved into "Delta 2" at 2640 Aero-Park Drive, the old 9&10 News Building. Patience is warranted as we settle into our new home with a boundless, breathless, and... everlasting "thank you!" to Dan Jonkhoff and Matt Golba.

We will keep the comms flowing about the move, so stay tuned.

What happened at Oshkosh? Chapter camping was a hoot, 20 of us were there in the wild, goofy, so very friendly Aerobubble of Camp Scholler. The entire time was good, noisy, at times profoundly fun, with F35’s, F4U’s, B-26’s, swarms of ultralights, the ever-present helo’s, a random C-17, and more filling the skies. Hot damn it was fun.
We hit it out of the park at our Chapter Pancake Breakfast at the Chapters Pavilion. The income is not yet in, but it is substantial. Sandy and Bob Denton beat 100 dozen eggs, Morgan Kruithoff served enough sausage to seriously consider becoming a vegan, Justin Bentsen picked up a healthy case of vertigo mastering pancakes on the rotary grill, and Tanner Bowen served enough eggs to run the griddle empty. Yup, we ran out.

I am so thrilled and so profoundly in awe at being part of this happy band of chefs.

What else? Tricia Davitt came in from Minneapolis Center, was promptly and happily dragooned into Warbirds by Randy McClure where she was promoted to a Warbirds tower controller.

Ryan Griffin-Stegink earned a genuinely nice award from EAA for his work on our website and newsletter.

We had our one obligatory, attention-getting rain and windstorm.

OSH... you gotta go!

8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

(Wings and Wheels event continues until 4 p.m.)

Wexford County Airport

8040 East 34 Mile Road, Cadillac, MI
We're hosting another one of our blockbuster pancake breakfast fly-ins (with Young Eagles flights) this Saturday morning at the Wexford County Airport, preceeding their 2nd annual Wings and Wheels event.

As usual, we need volunteers to run the event and fly Young Eagles. Please sign up now!

Parents, if you'd like to register your kids for a flight, do that here.

The Wings and Wheels event continues until 4 p.m. and features food trucks, a DJ, and of course, cars and airplanes. Last year's event attracted more than 2,000 people despite poor weather that kept most airplanes away. The forecast is looking a lot better for this year's event.

See you bright and early Saturday morning in Cadillac!

Your support needed

Turf operations at TVC

Eric Nuffer of Giving Wings Aviation is preparing to meet with Traverse City airport officials about establishing a designated area for turf operations.

Recently a Cessna 180 landed in the grass due to 18 being closed. Runway 28 had a 20+ knot crosswind. ATC allowed it with the caveat “at your own risk.”

The goal would be to have a designated landing (perhaps eventually a “runway”) published or at least allowed for the safe operation of aircraft that benefit from a turf surface in the name of safety AND wear and tear. The FAA recently published an advisory circular in support of establishing such areas.

Please email your support to Eric at info@flygwa.com and he will compile it into a document to present to the Airport Authority. Thank you!

Young Eagles Club

Pre-flight planning

Our next young Eagles Club gathering will be Sept 17th and will focus on pre-flight planning: those steps necessary for a pilot to plan and execute a safe flight. the students will prepare a flight plan including navigation, weather planning and routing. Our flight simulators will be used to simulate the planned flight as well as be used in an actual follow-up Young Eagles flight for those who successfully complete this session.

This will be our first event at our new location 2640 Aero Park Drive (Next to the NW Mich School of Aviation)

Pre-registration is requested so as to help us plan appropriately. Registration is available at: Young Eagles Day - Registration System

Looking forward to seeing you there!

National Award for Chapter Website

EAA honored Chapter 234 web and newsletter editor Ryan Griffin-Stegink at AirVenture 2022 with an award for the chapter website. Ryan was one of eight recipients of web and newsletter awards from chapters around the nation.

Ryan wishes to thank:
  • His predecessor Jim Sorbie for the countless hours he spent setting up the current website and newsletter system, giving Ryan a solid foundation to start from.
  • His wife Ariel for writing and editing on the current website and our all-new chapter website, which will debut later this year.
  • Chapter Secretary Christian Smith for his assistance (and bourbon) while working on the new website.
  • Our fearless President, Bill, for nominating him for this award.
Ryan is looking for help to establish a marketing team. If you're interested in social media, websites, or email marketing, send Ryan a note! Experience with web platforms (like WordPress) or MailChimp is helpful, but not necessary. We'll train you, if you want to learn!
A sneak peak at our new website, coming later this year.
