Why Canceling Student Loan Debt is
a Bad Idea
Working Americans hit hardest, message to students is greater dependency
Long Valley, New Jersey – The immediate cancellation of $10,000 of student loan debt by the Biden Administration is rapidly gaining critics from both Republicans and Democrats.

The move was not unexpected but has been called “student loan socialism” by some members of congress and “astonishingly unfair.” The $321 billion in forgiveness discriminates against those who chose the armed services or to sacrifice and save for education. And it discriminates against those who chose to learn a trade rather than take on massive student debt from over-priced universities.

Author Steve Rampton says, “There is a term for this. It’s called minimax. This is when minimum effort is made expecting maximum result.” Life doesn’t work this way. Someone is always on the line to cover the cost and in this case it is a further major tax on American workers.

Bill Belichick, the coach of the New England Patriots is known to remind his players, “There are no shortcuts in life or in football.” As dependency grows, government expands, debt increases, and taxes take a bigger bite to cover the entitlements. According to Rampton who holds an MBA and was a U.S. Navy officer, more Americans will be beholden to government.

In Alpha Nurd, Rampton says our system of education is broken. We elevate college degrees as a means of upward mobility and ignore the value of the trades. He cites that some of the greatest minds in history never received a college degree. The main issue, Rampton believes, is not just the cost to taxpayers but the message it sends about personal responsibility. “How will young people manage their future if government (taxpayers) bail them out from their own decisions?” Creating a dependency creates long term failure and saps individual motivation and ingenuity. This is exactly what leads to socialism.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called Biden’s decision “a slap in the face to working Americans. The Democrats’ student loan socialism is a slap in the face to working Americans who sacrificed to pay their debt or made different career choices to avoid debt. Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse said Biden’s executive order “baptizes a broken system,” and advantages college graduates over their blue-collar countrymen.”

For Rampton, the spiritual and practical implications of transferring money from one taxpayer to another is obvious. It creates resentment. Those who are forced to pay for the personal decisions made by others feel betrayed. Individual responsibility, not collective dependence is what God teaches us throughout the Bible.
