Countdown to COP26: Why countries must transition to a circular economy to deliver on their climate goals
In 2015, the countries of the world signed the Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. Six years later it is clear that national efforts are not enough. The pledges countries have made—which overwhelmingly focus on the renewable energy transition—will only take us 15% of the way towards meeting our climate goals.
This is according to our Circularity Gap Report 2021, which finds that we need a circular economy to limit dangerous warming. The report identifies 21 circular solutions that, if combined, can cut 39% of total global emissions and bring us the other 85% of the way.
The circular economy is the missing link in countries' climate commitment
In 2021, we are presented with an opportunity. As country leaders gather to update their climate pledges for COP26, held in Glasgow in November, our report provides them with a circular roadmap to steer action that will deliver our climate goal: a world well below 2-degrees.
Do you want to make a case for circularity in your country? Use our CGR 2021 toolkits to create an evidence-based narrative that illustrates why your national leaders should consider circularity and outlines key steps for getting started.
