Dear Circle Economy Community,

Moving towards a circular economy delivers plentiful benefits, from preserving material value to creating jobs. But more than that, the circular economy has the potential to mitigate climate breakdown, enabling us to cut 39% of total global emissions—bringing us down to the levels needed to protect and repair our planet.

At Circle Economy, we urge countries, businesses and cities to integrate circular strategies into their climate ambitions. Our Circularity Gap Report 2021 presents 21 circular solutions that, if implemented globally, will deliver the goal of the Paris Agreement: a world well below 2-degrees. As countries prepare for COP26, our report provides leaders with a clear roadmap to update their climate pledges.

Would you like to help us spread the word? Fill out this briefing and share it with politicians in your country to demand they take action on circularity. Your support is much appreciated; only if we collaborate can we achieve a circular economy.

Read on for more about our latest work and updates from the Circle Economy team.

Take care!

A fully circular clothing industry in the Netherlands is possible—and can bring plentiful employment benefits

Shifting to a full circular clothing industry in the Netherlands won't just impact the environment—it can also bring employment benefits, boosting job creation by as much as 25%. This is according to new research by HIVA and Circle Economy's Circular Jobs Initiative, Putting circular textiles to work: The employment potential of circular clothing in the Netherlands. The report dives into three scenarios for a circular clothing industry in the Netherlands, analysing the employment impact of each. It finds that prioritising repair, reuse and resale could bring the largest employment benefits; but realising this scenario will entail re- and upskilling our workforce to bridge current skills gaps.

Countdown to COP26: Why countries must transition to a circular economy to deliver on their climate goals

In 2015, the countries of the world signed the Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. Six years later it is clear that national efforts are not enough. The pledges countries have made—which overwhelmingly focus on the renewable energy transition—will only take us 15% of the way towards meeting our climate goals.

This is according to our Circularity Gap Report 2021, which finds that we need a circular economy to limit dangerous warming. The report identifies 21 circular solutions that, if combined, can cut 39% of total global emissions and bring us the other 85% of the way.

The circular economy is the missing link in countries' climate commitment

In 2021, we are presented with an opportunity. As country leaders gather to update their climate pledges for COP26, held in Glasgow in November, our report provides them with a circular roadmap to steer action that will deliver our climate goal: a world well below 2-degrees.

Do you want to make a case for circularity in your country? Use our CGR 2021 toolkits to create an evidence-based narrative that illustrates why your national leaders should consider circularity and outlines key steps for getting started.
