8 New DSD Releases!

A Warm Welcome to Psalmus - A New Label at NativeDSD.

Quatuor pour la fin du Temps

(Quartet for the End of Time) Mark Van de Wiel, Mats Lidström, Min-Jung Kym, and Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay bring you their account of Olivier Messiaen’s piece for Piano, Clarinet, Cello, and Violin.

Choose options

Composed by Olivier Messiaen as a tribute to the Angel of the Revelation, who lifts up his hand to heaven, saying “There Should Be Time No Longer,” the Quatuor pour la fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time) is written in an spiritual musical language, which draws the listener into a sense of the eternity. Its eight movements are based on the perfect number of seven, the creation of six days made holy by the divine Sabbath, which prolongs itself into eternity and becomes the eighth of unfailing light, of immutable peace.

Saint Matthew Passion (1534)

Vox Cantoris and Jean-Christophe Candau perform the St. Matthew’s Passion by Claudin de Sermisy.

Choose options

The Vox Cantoris ensemble performs an unpublished saint Matthew Passion miraculously discovered among the very first French printed music in 1534, composed by Claudin de Sermisy, the greatest French Renaissance Master of Music. This liturgical passion offers a remarkable narration of the last hours of the Christ. It alternates plainchant, and polyphony, without any intervention other than the human voice in all its richness.

The six singers gather in a carnal sound, that wonderfully restores the sensuality and clarity of the tones.
Guillaume Bunel, Diapason 4/5, May 2018

These polyphonies are of the highest beauty. They are typical of Sermisy in their clarity and the efforts made to keep the text understandable. It takes all the craft of a truly great composer to manage in such a way diversifying a musical discourse, subject to such a tight constraint. The transparent sound record leaves voices very expressive.
Hervé Pennven, La Nef, April 2019

More New Music at NativeDSD, Released Today!

Mega Bass

Frédéric Alarie releases the new album Mega Bass, featuring an Octobass!

Choose options

Frederic Alarie follows up his initial release at NativeDSD Music – In The Spirit of Legends: Chet Baker & Scott LaFaro with his new album titled Mega Bass.

With Mega Bass, Frederic Alarie and 2xHD seek to challenge your sound system in the low register, capturing the warmth of the second harmonics in pristine clarity. It is rare to find an album that truly emphasizes the Bass instrument. This release seeks to fully recognize the versatility of that instrument!

Tracks 2-9 of the album were recorded off-the-floor at St-Jean Baptiste Chapel in Montreal, Canada. This Analog Recording was made on a quarter inch Nagra IV-S analog recorder in master eq curve, with no overdubs or editing. A single Fidelio stereo Tube microphone RL-1 was used in the Pure Blumlein microphone technique. It has been transferred to Stereo DXD and DSD by 2xHD Mastering.

Track 1, which features the legendary Octobass, was recorded at la Maison Symphonique de Montreal in the same fashion. The Octobass is the lowest-pitched and largest-sized instruments of the string family. At a height of almost 11.5 feet, this instrument produces extreme low bass extension harmonics: down to 20 Hz with a peak of 28 Hz.

Frédéric Alarie amazes by the color, depth, and audacity he puts forward in his work. As a musician, composer, or soloist, he constantly pushes the limits of both his own expression and of Jazz itself.

A member of the Lorraine Desmarais trio since 1993, he has recorded on 34 albums as an accompanist and soloist. He has played on hundreds of other albums as a guest artist with several of these albums having received awards.

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (DSD EP)

Sir Antonio Pappano and London Symphony Orchestra bring you more Vaughan Williams!

Choose options

Sir Antonio Pappano’s new album of Vaughan Williams Symphonies 4 & 6 garnered major critical acclaim after its release on LSO Live in April. Now, the LSO’s next Chief Conductor returns to our label with a new recording of the composer’s beloved ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.’

Known for its lush, expansive music for string orchestra, not only is the ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ one of Vaughan Williams’s most cherished works, but it was also named amongst the nation’s favorite pieces in the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2021. Also known as the ‘Tallis Fantasia,’ its beautiful theme originates from another English musician, the 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis.

Vaughan Williams wrote the piece during one of his most fruitful periods of composition, after being commissioned by the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival. In the end, he presented a landmark piece that his biographer James Day calls ‘unquestionably the first work by Vaughan Williams that is recognizably and unmistakably his and no one else’s.’ It became the work to cement Vaughan Williams’ reputation not only at home, but across the rest of Europe.

This recording by Sir Antonio Pappano was captured on Sunday 15 March 2020, the night before the first coronavirus lockdown in the UK, during the same Barbican concert in which his celebrated account of the composer’s Sixth Symphony was also made. It joins our next Chief Conductor’s critically acclaimed recordings of the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies, also available at NativeDSD.

Ta’ Mig Med (Take Me)

Jesper Sivebaek plays Kim Larsen songs for classical guitar.

Choose options

Kim Larsen (1945-2018) – the much loved Danish rock musician and multi-artist – captures – in music and words – the Danish soul. With his 500 recorded songs and 40 albums he is known by Danes of all ages. Guitarist, and head of guitar department at The Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Jesper Sivebæk, had two heroes in his youth: Andrés Segovia and Kim Larsen – and they have followed him ever since.

For more than 10 years Jesper Sivebæk has worked on the pieces on this album. With his vast experience he uses the possibilities of the guitar to the utmost and follows the classical tradition of making instrumental versions of folk songs. Like in Miguel Llobet’s arrangements of Catalan folksongs, in Benjamin Britten’s English and Chinese folksongs arrangements, and in Bela Bartok’s Hungarian folk songs. Sivebæk is true both to the beauty and the simplicity of Kim Larsen’s songs, and to his instrument – the classical Spanish guitar. In these arrangements’ classical guitar players around the globe now have 12 new pieces to discover and put on their concert programs.

Eclipse Vol. 1: Joseph Wölfl

Pianist Mattias Spee plays Eclipse Vol. 1: Joseph Wölfl

Choose options

“Joseph Wölfl is one of the most undervalued composers from this era. During his lifetime, he was one of the biggest stars in the world of music, which is remarkable, considering his complete lack of popularity now. About three years ago, I listened to Wölfl’s music for the first time and was profoundly moved. I was surprised to learn that he was only three years younger than Beethoven. His musical vocabulary, while firmly rooted in a classicist background, is clearly indicative of early romanticism and is very reminiscent of Schubert’s music and sometimes even Mendelssohn’s or Schumann’s, all of whom where only children when Wölfl died. So, it’s safe to say that Wölfl’s music was ahead of its time in many respects. What’s more, his pieces cover a wide range of genres and styles; what you can hear on this album is only a fraction.

Last year, I started playing some of Wölfl’s pieces myself and that experience has not just confirmed but deepened my love for his music. I thought it would be very exciting, if more people could hear it and share my appreciation for it. That is why I am extremely grateful that I have had the opportunity to record this album.”
