Fri 11 June 2021:
Your regular update from Reading Borough Council on our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how you can help
A message from Reading Borough Council leader Jason Brock
Since starting surge testing on Monday for anyone aged 12 and over who lives, works or studies in the RG1 3**, RG1 5**, RG1 6** and RG1 7** postcode areas, the response has been excellent.

Thank you to the thousands of you who have already come forward for testing. By doing so you are helping find and isolate cases to suppress transmission.
Residents in those areas should look out for a letter arriving from today. If you are eligible, please do your bit by taking a PCR test too - even if you don’t have symptoms, have received one or both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, or have been taking lateral flow tests regularly. However, anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 90 days using a PCR test should not take this extra test as it may result in a ‘false positive’ result.   Our surge testing address lookup map will help you check if you should come forward for testing.

The testing sites (listed below) are open until Sunday 20 June, and now include the Town Hall. If you are unable to get to one of the testing sites, then you can also order a test from the Government website or by calling 119.

Vaccination is also key to overcoming COVID-19, and people aged 25 and over can now book their vaccine, either online on the NHS website or by calling 119. Please do go and get vaccinated to help us stay on top of the virus and increase your chance of not contracting it. It is proven that vaccination has a significant impact on the spread and severity of the virus.

The Forbury One Year On
It is almost a year since the terrible events at Forbury Gardens at which three members of our local community lost their lives. On Sunday 20 June, Reading comes together to remember James Furlong, Joe Ritchie Bennett and David Wails at a Memorial Service which will pay tribute to the innocent victims who lost their lives and all those injured and harmed at the Forbury Gardens exactly a year earlier.

The people of Reading are invited to join the Memorial Service online via the live stream on the Council's Facebook page from 4pm on Sunday 20 June. The service itself is also open to the public; however, places are very limited due to ongoing COVID restrictions on large gatherings in public spaces, and the Council is respectfully requesting that anyone who wishes to attend reserves a place online. Due to the sensitive nature of this event, tickets are restricted to 1 per person.

Finally, with the Euro 2020 football tournament starting this evening, please only come into the town centre to watch England’s Euro 2020 matches if you have already booked tickets. Due to COVID-19 capacity restrictions the vast majority of venues screening England matches, which begin on Sunday, will only accommodate pre-bookings with no walk-ins accepted.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about surge testing:

Why is this happening, and why should I go for the test?
Because there is an increasing number of cases in Reading of the variant first identified in India, known as the ‘Delta’ variant.  The testing will help us find and isolate as many cases as possible, and therefore suppress transmission of the variant.

I have already had the COVID-19 vaccine - do I still need to take the extra test?
Yes. The extra test is important whether you have not yet been vaccinated, have had one dose, or have had both vaccinations.

I am already taking lateral flow tests twice a week - do I still need to take the extra test?
Yes, the extra 'surge' testing is different from the lateral flow testing so please do take it.

Do I need to book an appointment?
No, the process is really simple - just pop along to one of the test centres above during opening hours and you will be able to get a test. Alternatively you can order one online or by calling 119.

Under what circumstances should someone NOT get the extra test?
If you have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 90 days using a PCR test then do not get the extra test. Also if you do not live or work in the RG1 3**, RG1 5**, RG1 6** or RG1 7** postcodes then you also shouldn't go along for one of the extra tests.

What do I need to do after taking the test?
You’ll get a text or email with your result within 3 days. If you do not have symptoms you can continue to go to work or school while you wait for your results.

What if I test positive from the surge test?
If your test is positive then you should:
  • self-isolate immediately along with your household for 10 days to stop the spread of the virus;
  • engage with contact tracers when contacted;
  • check if you are eligible for a self-isolation support payment
  • contact the One Reading Community Hub if you need extra help to self-isolate
