Department of Surgery Statement

Regarding Islamophobia and London Muslim Terrorist Attack

Dear Faculty, Fellows, and Residents,

We are deeply saddened by the violent murder of the Afzaal family in an act of terrorism on Sunday night in London, Ontario. We are sick with grief for the little 9 year old boy, Fayez Afzaal, who is suffering with injuries and the life altering loss of his family.  Along with all communities who stand against racism and hatred, our thoughts are with the Muslim community as this senseless act of hatred has caused them so much grief, fear, and loss.

Hatred of Muslims, and Islamophobia should have no place anywhere in Canada. We stand in solidarity with our Muslim colleagues, learners, patients, and community members. We should remind ourselves daily that we must recognize and call out Islamophobia and ALL forms of racism, intolerance, and hate. Silence will not lead to change -- only action will.  Our daily interactions with our patients, colleagues and learners must affirm equity, inclusion and a sense of social justice.

The University of Toronto Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office (ARCDO) is holding a community vigil for members of the Muslim community and their allies on Wednesday, June 16th from 11am – 12pm ET over Zoom.
