What's in Bloom this month?

JULY 2021

Photo of the Month: "Bloom Tiger Stripes"

We love this photo from Maryland farmer Andrew Keller of Vista View Farms, who affectionately refers to his hayfield as having “Bloom tiger stripes.”

Andrew says, “It is amazing to see the difference in growth between Bloom-applied and non-Bloom areas. The Bloom-applied areas took off, growing faster by a week, and the grass blades are wider and taller that the non-Bloom. An as an added bonus, that dark green color carried through to the bales."

Customer of the Month: Ruppert Nurseries

If you're a landscaper who has ever purchased trees from Ruppert Nurseries, you may have procured a specimen grown in Bloom! The wholesale grower grows approximately 150 varieties of shade, ornamental and evergreen trees for outplanting, including prominent sites like the National Mall, the White House, the National Zoo and Flight 93 Memorial.

"Bloom is a nutrient rich product that helps amend our soils before we plant our fields.  When we are ready to plant our fields, we topdress with Bloom, till, plant a temporary cover crop and follow with our trees.  Bloom helps with the soil fertility and to retain soil moisture, which reduces our watering demands," said Nick Graves, Farm Operations Manager for the Laytonsville, MD company.

FAQ: What are Soil Conditioners, Exactly?

Bloom fields a lot of questions from garden and plant lovers trying to suss out the differences between products and terms like compost, soil conditioners, soil amendments and fertilizers. We've put together this resource page to help!

Is Bloom a fertilizer or a soil amendment you ask? The short answer is both. Bloom is our brand name, and under the Bloom brand we have both registered fertilizer and soil amendment products. Reach out to learn more and see what product might be right for your lawn, landscaping or other project.

Pollinator Week Recap

We loved seeing all the gorgeous shots for Pollinator Week June 21-27, including this beauty of a bumblebee on an echinacea flower grown in Bloom in a Washington, DC community garden.

From bees to bats, pollinators provide pollination services to over 180,000 different plant species and more than 1200 crops. Bloom is proud to be helping to build healthy soils needed to sustain the many flowering crops that feed us and the pollinators they indirectly feed!

Research Finds Bloom Best Soil Amendment for Wetland Restoration

A new study funded by the Maryland State Highway Administration, the largest wetland builder in Maryland Research, shows Bloom outperforms other soil amendments when used to build mitigation wetlands.

Wetlands are important ecosystems, cleaning and maintaining our water supplies. Whenever a wetland is removed to build new roads or neighborhoods, new ones are built. The secret to cleaning our water is a soil chemistry that is unique to wetlands. So, to condition the soil, new wetland projects often include some type of soil conditioner and organic amendment. Recent research conducted by Brian Scott, a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, compared different amendments.

"Bloom performed better than other organic amendments in several key categories," including lowest levels of methane production and highest levels of plant growth (as seen in the lush patches of growth in the photo above), according to Scott. Download a summary of the research to learn more.
