The FIAT/IFTA Archive Achievement Awards are designed to honor outstanding archival initiatives and projects that have significantly improved the ways in which the archives are preserved, managed and used. EXCELLENCE IN MEDIA MANAGEMENT AWARD

We are looking for archive technology projects which have experimented, developed and implemented new and emerging media management technologies and tools opening up the archives in new and efficient ways.

Which projects are eligible?

Here are some examples of projects that would qualify to be eligible for the Excellence in Media Management Award: MAM preparation, data or MAM migration, MAM implementation, AI initiatives, data management initiatives, new search engines, workflow automation, speech to text, voice recognition, and visual recognition.

Meet our 2020 winner:

DAAN Tenancy for the Durch Parliament'' by Annelies Cordes and Arnoud Goos, of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. Our jury report mentioned that “this project is a clever and inventive use of Media Management tools to manage multiple collections and owners, one that really leads the way in MAM (pronounced as the word mam) and archive provision for institutions who own varying sizes of AV collections, but lack the expertise to manage them.”

EXCELLENCE IN MEDIA PRESERVATION AWARD

We are looking for projects in the domain of analogue or digital preservation that have successfully developed and implemented a (part of the) preservation process that excels in professionalism or innovation.

Which projects are eligible?

Projects related to the following topics would be eligible for the Excellence in Media Preservation Award: digitization projects (audio, video, films, records, files, photos, e.g), film restoration, colour restoration, warehouse construction, IT inhouse applications, and tracking tools.

Meet our 2020 winner:

RAI Teche XClope Project”, by Danila Komar, of RAI in Italy. Our jury report mentioned that “The project is a perfect example of a particularly rigorous application of the prevailing standards for the digitization of audio objects, combined with the smart use of new technologies. As a result, a rare quality and efficiency level is achieved. Moreover, the workflow is designed in such a way that immediate valorisation online becomes possible.”

Due to the amount of ambitious projects that we have received in the “Excellence in Archival Use and Valorisation” category, we have decided to reorganize this award into two new categories so our Jury can award more projects that deserve to be recognized. FIAT/IFTA is pleased to introduce our two new awards: “Excellence in Unlocking the Value and Potential of Archives” and “Excellence in Archive Production”.

EXCELLENCE IN UNLOCKING THE VALUE AND POTENTIAL OF ARCHIVES

This award focuses on projects that have taken advantage of some or all aspects of archive collections in a digital environment  in order to increase awareness and grow the value and use of audiovisual archives worldwide.

We are looking for initiatives that reflect on the value of audiovisual archives by increasing its visibility and exploring new ways of its exploitation targeting specific user groups and audiences, contributing to access and discoverability, storytelling, user engagement, addressing copyright and intellectual property issues, technology, ethics, etc.

Which projects are eligible?

Our Jury report mentioned that “the project has been created as a result of significant collaboration between INA departments, requiring expertise from collections management, technology, communications, research, finance, administrative, legal and rights teams. It proves the value that archives can add to the viewing experience by unlocking archive content for entertainment purposes. Its ambition, scale and audience reach potential are impressive.”

EXCELLENCE IN ARCHIVE PRODUCTION

As we mentioned above, the “Excellence in Archive Production” award is one of the new categories created from the old “Excellence in Archival Use and Valorisation” award.

We are looking for projects that illustrate the best use of archive content (stills, film, video, audio) in an audiovisual or audio production.
