THE MCPHERSON MEMO

Hello all,

What a delight it was this week to host three of our Brooklyn-based McP employees on my rooftop for an afternoon work session. With reductions in COVID cases and enough vaccinations to make a difference, a sense of normalcy is starting to return to my hometown, New York City. It is of course NOT the same for many parts of the world.

Here though, calendars are starting to fill up and it seems like business as usual. After spending many months in isolation, I welcome this change. And at the same time, in some ways it seems a bit jarring to be immediately thrust back into crowded subway cars, restaurants and streets. Also, are we kidding ourselves that we can recover so rapidly from something none of us has ever experienced in the course of our lives?  This New Yorker article resonated: "How A City Comes Back to Life."

I’m not sure what the answer is and a former colleague recently shared with me that in seeing friends, something just seemed “off.” My answer was immediate: of course. Even as an extra extrovert, I’m feeling trepidation. Given that, let’s be gentle with one another, lead with kindness and compassion, and realize every single one of us experienced this past year in differing ways.

Happy Summer,

Susan

ON OUR MINDS
Brought to you by Account Director Maria Boemi, who is looking forward to taking her new bike for a spin this weekend with baby Raffa in tow.

Say it loud
From its roots as a riot against police brutality and excessive policing in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn led by Black and Latinx transgender women and drag queens, to its current positioning in the mainstream sphere, Pride Month has evolved both in form and social acceptance. However, Pride still serves as a time to highlight the stories and lived experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community, past and present, including the experiences of kids who will embody the next generation of the LGBTQIA+ community. “Giving children the freedom to explore their gender identity is key to their well-being and resilience,” explains this article in The New York Times on raising a gender nonconforming child in a world that still very much abides by a binary system. The adults among us can turn to a new partnership between McP client Reimagine Gender and the PR Council, designed to help communications pros expand their understanding of gender. And, a new stock image library from VICE features images of trans and non-binary models that will help media better represent members of these communities.

Planet Earth is blue and there’s much for us to do
There has always been a tension between the nuances of climate science and the narrative that is captured by the general public. New research released this week suggests that the emissions produced by our global food system may be twice as large as previously thought. McP client Persefoni has noted that several top oil and gas companies faced rebukes that will force a clear commitment to mitigating targets moving forward. As these monumental shifts in our understanding of the climate landscape occur in real time, can our collective understanding of accountability shift quickly enough to make an impact? Speaking of keeping up with changes, there is now officially a fifth ocean, announced this week on World Oceans Day.

For those who have been lucky enough to continue working remotely throughout the pandemic, a big milestone is speeding into view. Many companies are targeting September to announce a return to the office, whether full-time or in a hybrid model. Are you secretly excited to have a commute again? You’re not alone! Whatever your situation, it’s clear that employee well-being is at the top of everyone’s mind. McP has always been a fully remote company, but I am looking forward to getting out of the house more this summer and posting up at a coffee shop some days to help break up the week.
