June

June is a great time to take advantage of completing some key action steps in the college admissions process, included below for grades 9-12.

Seniors

Congratulations on graduating after a challenging year! As the summer begins, make sure you go outside, relax, and spend time with family and friends – you deserve it! That said, don’t forget to complete some key steps before college begins. Ensure that you submit your final transcript, complete required immunizations, and begin organizing and planning for the upcoming academic year. More information on preparing for college can be found HERE. If your college allows you to select your own roommate, begin engaging with the process. Click HERE for some tips to remember when searching for a roommate and setting yourself up for success. At this time, it is VERY important that you are diligently checking your email and keeping up with communication from the university you have decided to attend. Most colleges will communicate directly with students, not parents, and will disclose key information about enrollment, medical forms, housing, meal plans, and more.

As exams finish up and your schedule allows, it is a great time to research the schools on your list and get to know them in a more meaningful way. Remember to utilize all of the resources available and keep an eye out for campuses reopening to in person visits and continue engaging with virtual tours. Additionally, click HERE for a list of questions that can be asked on tours, at info sessions, in interviews, and to current students and faculty. If you have not already, make sure you confirm your teacher letters of recommendation. Also, some colleges allow for a third letter of recommendation focused on your character and or engagement in a community. Check to see if this applies to any schools on your list and think about asking a coach, employer, mentor, or someone else you think would be a good fit to write you an additional letter. By August, the main portion of your Common Application should be close to complete. Continue filling out the profile, family, education, activity, and testing sections. You should also start working on your main essay. Tackling these items this summer will allow you to focus on any additional school specific questions in the fall. Sophomores

As the summer begins, now is a great time to continue to build and out your list of colleges and conduct preliminary research. If time and travel allow, the summer is a wonderful time to see a few colleges and universities. If you plan to travel in the US this summer, might there be a college in the area you could visit? At this point, you are halfway through high school and it is important to reflect on your performance thus far. Request an unofficial copy of your transcript to date. What kind of academic story are you writing? If you think you may play Division I or II sports in college, register for the NCAA and the NAIA Eligibility Center. Familiarize yourself with the NCAA requirements and check that your courses are NCAA approved. Make sure you communicate with your school counselor your interest in college athletics.

Freshmen

Begin to build out your exploratory list and research schools you may be interested in. This summer, make sure you relax and spend time with your family and friends. Check your habits: Turn off the television and your phone. Read. Expand your vocabulary and your world. Go outside. Take a walk or ride your bike. Congratulations on finishing your first year of high school!
