Hello <<First Name>>,

This week we paused to remember victims of a horrible crime: this time, a family of four who were struck down by a driver in London, Ont.

London may be far from here, but the ripples of hate, racism and Islamophobia are felt here daily, and we need to see it to fix it.

Take a moment to watch this video from last Wednesday’s vigil at the Ummah Masjid Mosque and remember Salman, Mediha, Yumna and Talat.

Childhood taken

“I need to forgive. But I can’t forget,” Millbrook elder Jane Abram told journalist Chelsey Gould recently.

The 78-year-old is a survivor of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.

“I need to talk about the sadness that was there,” Abram said. “It's something that needs to be told ... young people have to hear this. See what happened to our people.”

Read what Abram shared with Gould.

Some good news

Two elementary students teamed up with a retired mailman-turned-owl-expert to save three baby owls who tumbled from their nest too soon.

Check out these cute owlets and learn more about how you can improve the lives of Nova Scotia’s barred owls in this piece from Anita Flowers:

What to do this week

Refresh your playlist. From ECMA-honoured familiar names to a relative newcomer who’s single has replaced Olivia Rodrigo’s in our house, it’s time for new tunes.

Tell your pet story. If you’re 55+, you could be part of a docuseries about people and their beloved animals.

Park for free. Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. through June, July and August, you can pull up at a meter downtown without paying.

Get tested! This week’s rapid testing locations.

It’s the end of an era.

Theodore Too tooted off to Ontario this week and the Great Big Harbour is less colourful for it.

Watching working tugs from the waterfront was a fun part of raising kids in the city for my family, but if you yearn for a visit with a boat wearing a hat, you can visit the Theodore Tugboat display at the Maritime Museum.

Another big part of my past Halifax weekends – breakfast at the Athens – is leaving us by the end of the summer. I’m hoping to hit that patio before the restaurant says goodbye!

It’s an end of the SALT era for me, as well. I’m leaving my SaltWire roles for a new opportunity. Unlike Theodore Too, I’m staying put in Nova Scotia and you can still find me on Twitter, but I’ll no longer be showing up in your email each week.

Your response to this newsletter has brought me a joy over the past 14 months. Thank you for reading and for sharing your ideas and opinions with me.

Special thanks to our most recent SALT newsletter team – Jill, Steve and Spencer – and to our guest writers over the past year.

I hope that SALT will continue to provide a wrap of Halifax news under new leadership. In the meantime, follow SALT on Twitter and Instagram.

Be well and be kind to your neighbours.
