JUNE 2021

A Word From Our Director General

Kurt Edwards
Although the feeling of post-pandemic relief is taking hold in many places, there are still problem areas around the world.  Challenges related to the balance of public health protection and economic activity will continue.  Aviation suffers especially from this balancing act, subject to a variety of national travel restrictions and quarantines.  IBAC distributed in May a post-pandemic messaging guide for member associations’ use with respective government agencies to encourage the use of risk-based approaches to restart international operations.

It has been terrific to see member associations keeping in touch with the community through online activities, particularly in May.  AfBAA’s interview with Capt. Musa Nuhu, Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, was wide-ranging and quite interesting with regard to the challenges facing and the opportunities for business aviation in Nigeria.  And EBAA’s EBACE Connect provided engagement and industry insight over several days of panel discussions and presentations.  In June and July, IBAC will offer some free safety webinars; please check out the IBAC website for details.
I would also like to welcome two new IBAC Industry Partners that we announced in May, CAE and FlightSafety International.  We thank them both for their support and look forward to collaborating with them on many initiatives in the future.

Last, please join me in congratulating Terry Yeomans, Director of the IS-BAH Programme, on receiving the Flight Safety Foundation’s Business Aviation Meritorious Safety Award for his work in promoting ground-handling safety.  His leadership of the IS-BAH Programme has demonstrated that SMS can be applied in the ground-handling context as well as the operator context. IS-BAH was the first ground-handling industry standard to incorporate SMS.  As a result, Terry was instrumental in providing critical input to the development of the ICAO Manual on Ground-Handling.
