FROM THE BHS HEAD OF SCHOOL
06.13.21

Hi, BHS Parents, Guardians, and Caretakers,

We enter the final full week of the 2020-21 school year tomorrow, and the kids keep chugging along. They are more than alright after a short year in amount of days (170 versus 180) but long...in...just...about...every...other...way.

BHS Commencement
Last Sunday at this time, we were sweating and celebrating the Class of 2021 at Fisher Hill Reservoir Park, a beautiful location for spreading out and offering wonderful sightlines and views. In the center sat our 2021 graduates, grinning often and bearing the heat too.

Huge thanks to Parks and Open Space and the DPW, the Brookline Police Department, community volunteers, Brookline Interactive Group, Interstate Rental Service, our BHS senior deans and administrators, and the many clerical, custodial, and faculty staff members who pitched in.

The Class of 2021 deserved something special, and Sunday's event offered a whole lot of joy, especially as the graduates crossed the stage and received their diplomas.

BlackBoard Updates A-coming
At the beginning of this week, I will be sharing several updates via BlackBoard: spring athletics and postseason play, the renovation and expansion project and timeline, end of year course material returns, time on learning information and planning, and a few other pieces.

For now, I hope your students are sensing summer coming and some respite from the school year pace and pattern. I know I find myself wanting my own children to slow down some when school ends. We all have work to do and projects to take on. Rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation are also critical after 16 months of unprecedented uncertainty, change, and challenges. I am grateful for our students who have navigated this with us and for the adults in our shifting, blurring, domains (school, home, etc.).

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday,

Anthony

BHS PARENTS: JOIN THE SUMMER READING

Every summer BHS students engage in a common summer reading experience. This summer, all faculty will join the students in reading,  Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson.  The book is about the many kinds of unfairness n the American criminal legal system and a story of  hope and resilience.  The common reading of this book will serve multiple purposes next year as justice and equity will be part of our work as a larger BHS community next.

The Summer Reading Planning Team invites parents and caretakers to join in our summer reading of Just Mercy.  We would love to have you read the book and/or watch the film.  For information on watching the film or accessing the book, go here.  The PTO will be co-hosting a book-club style conversations with other parents and caretakers this summer. If you are interested in joining a book discussion group, please go here. Thank-you for supporting this important  BHS initiative.

BHS PEER LEADER PODCAST ON STUDENT RESILIENCE

The past 18 months have been unsettling to say the least, with everyone making constant adjustments to stay productive yet safe. The Peer Leaders just released an insightful six-minute podcast that highlights some of their positives experiences as and lesson learned. It's a lovely glimmer of resilience and hope as we adjust – yet again! -   to a “new normal.” Have a listen - https://anchor.fm/brooklinepeerleaders.

The BHS Innovation Fund is excited to announce over $300,000 in program grant investments for teaching and learning at BHS in 2021-22: two new courses will launch, four courses will continue through their final year of funding, and faculty will have the opportunity to reflect on pedagogy in the pandemic year at an upcoming summer summit. In the first new course "Rethinking the Restaurant: Creating Community through Social Impact", the BHS restaurant is coming back, with students taking the lead in running its business operations in meaningful and creative ways; and in the second new course "Climate Science and Social Solutions," an interdisciplinary team-taught elective with instruction from both the scientific and historical perspectives, students will engage in project-based learning by analyzing real world policy options related to climate change and delve into advocacy.
