eNewsletter #505 - 15 June 2021

Five teens have been arrested following a pursuit with a stolen Land Rover Discovery overnight.
About 12.55am (Monday 14 June 2021), The Hills Highway Patrol officers noticed a grey Land Rover Discovery travelling at speed on the M2 Motorway, North Ryde.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over however, it failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
Police pursued the vehicle through North Ryde, Lane Cove and Gordon, before road spikes were successfully deployed on Mona Vale Road, St Ives.
The Land Rover eventually stopped on Palm St, St Ives, about 1.10am (Monday 14 June 2021), before five teens fled on foot.
All five males – three aged 15, one aged 16 and one aged 17 - were arrested a short time later and taken to Hornsby Police Station.
Following routine checks, police established the vehicle was stolen.
Inquiries are continuing.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or visit site here. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.

Hi everyone,
I would like to warn the community that we had a suspicious person around the Killara station area, loitering around the front of the apartment and managed to get inside by following someone else then went exploring around. They were around for 14 HOURS yesterday and 3 hours today.
I’ve called police and eventually they came. After extensive questioning and with the info I had, they arrested the person.

NSW has become the first state in Australia to automatically ban anyone convicted of serious animal abuse from owning or working with animals after a government bill introducing tougher penalties for animal cruelty passed the state parliament last night. It follows other recent changes to animal cruelty laws passed this year, which include jail time and fines of up to $110,000.
The new legislation is unique in that the lifetime ban is automatically imposed upon conviction.
Animal Welfare League NSW welcomes these changes and looks forward to working into the future with the new laws to ensure the best possible welfare outcomes for all animals.

INTERSECTION UPDATE #5 -
Here's a further short update along with some direct responses to some of the outstanding or additional suggestions received regarding the Duffy Avenue/Chilvers Road/The Esplanade intersection. Thank you to all who have commented that they've seen improvements and expressed understanding that more work is to come.
As I promised, the graphic below has been created to show the final layout of the intersection - as approved by Transport for NSW.
📌 Traffic building up out of Westleigh- as you can see by the graphic, the traffic lights on Duffy Avenue on the exit from Westleigh are shown (by the blue dots) in their new position. This relocation, together with changed phasing of the lights (which will occur after relocation) will further assist traffic exiting on Duffy Avenue.
As previously stated, these lights are scheduled for re-location during the week of Mon 21 June, weather permitting.
📌 Traffic building up coming into Westleigh- strong concerns have been expressed about the traffic building up on Duffy Avenue stretching back to Pennant Hills Road. This is being monitored particularly during the PM peak and this is believed to be a result of the phasing between the two sets of lights. Some 'tweaking' has been undertaken but with more to come as work concludes.
📌 Line marking / lane marking & arrows- all line marking as shown on this final plan will be put in place as part of the final completion of the intersection. This will only occur once all of the works have been completed, including the relocation of the traffic lights on Duffy Avenue.
📌 Pedestrian Crossings - crossing Chilvers Road from Duffy Avenue - the pedestrian crossings that have been removed to allow work to progress will be reinstated, as shown on the plan, and this will occur by early August, to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
📌 When will it be finished?
Work is scheduled to be completed with the intersection completely resurfaced and line marked by end August - weather and Transport for NSW approval dependent.
Lastly, the final layout shown below will be added to Council's website, along with any further updates next week.
10 June, from NSW Police Force
In the below situation, where the continuing road goes around a corner, which statement is correct?
A. Car A must give way to Car B, as Car A is entering from a side road.
B. Car B gives way, as it must turn left (it is not permitted to continue directly over broken lines).
C. Car A must give way, as Car B put its indicator on first.
D. Car B must give way to the oncoming car (Car A) on the continuing road.
Answer: The correct answer is D. At a T-intersection where the continuing road goes around a corner, the car leaving the continuing road (Car B ) must give way to the oncoming car on the continuing road (Car A).

Skippers reminded to keep a safe distance after man critically injured when breaching whale lands on boat.
Authorities are urging skippers to be aware of surroundings and maintain safe distances while on the water during this season’s whale migration along the NSW coast.
The reminder follows a significant increase in the number of whales migrating north through NSW waters and a serious incident involving a recreational vessel on the state’s South Coast at the weekend.
Just after 9am on Sunday (6 June 2021), Marine Rescue NSW received a MAYDAY call after a breaching whale landed on top of a recreational vessel off the coast of Narooma.
The 39-year-old male skipper advised that his 18-year-old male passenger had sustained a serious head injury and was trying to navigate back to the boat ramp despite the vessel taking on water.
NSW Ambulance paramedics met the vessel at the boat ramp and treated both men before taking them to hospital for treatment.
The younger man was later airlifted from Moruya Hospital to Canberra Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition, while the older man was treated at Moruya Hospital for facial lacerations and concussion.
Marine Area Commander, Superintendent Joe McNulty, said Maritime NSW has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“While inquiries are in their infancy, the incident demonstrates the dangers these mammals can pose to those on the water,” Supt McNulty said.
“In recent days, the number of whales migrating north has dramatically increased, and maritime authorities have received reports they’re travelling closer to the coast than in previous years.
“Given the close proximity to the shoreline, there is potential for some spectacular whale watching, but we encourage anyone hoping to get a closer look to maintain a safe distance as outlined in the Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017.”
More information about whale watching and safety tips from NPWS are available online here.
08 June: From heraldsun.com.au: Police urge social media users not to name and shame people on Facebook

THINK that guy’s a creep? Don’t post his picture on Facebook or other social media. You’re running the risk of defamation, police warn.

In the wake of the Star Wars fan who took a simple selfie and was shamed by a mum who mistook him for taking photos of her children and a male train user having unsubstantiated allegations levelled at him, police have condemned a third case of trial by social media.

A woman posted photos of a man to a Facebook page set up by the Maroondah community, claiming he harassed her friend and stole her car.

The woman posted several CCTV images on Monday, May 18, of a man pictured at the front of a house.

The woman said she was trying to seek the identity of the man from the community after he had allegedly harassed her friend in the Croydon and Kilsyth area.

In a comment under the post, the woman said she had notified police and hoped “if we get any info the police will do something about it.”

But Croydon Sergeant Ben Rosevear condemned the post, and said distribution of such information should be left to Victoria Police and the media.

“Do not do it. Just because you can post something doesn’t mean you should,” Sgt Rosevear said.

“The process must be followed. You can’t just suspect a person on a whim, without there being ramifications if you are incorrect.
