Commencement Updates

Bedford High School's Senior Send Off was a splendid success on Monday evening; the Send Off Committee's article includes links to a full set of party photos, the heartfelt appreciation of the Bedford High School Parent Association, an extensive list of thanks for the community's support.

Shawsheen Tech shared its list of Bedford graduates in the Class of 2021, and an overview of the school By the Numbers.

A charming commencement ceremony celebrated the nine youngsters who graduated from the Bedford Children's Center and will head to kindergarten in September.

Town Board, Committee, and Departmental News

The Bedford Fire Department is one of four Massachusetts facilities recognized for contributions to the Veterans Health Administration during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Development plans for rental units at 330 South Road were discussed on Monday, and the Select Board heard preliminary information about repaving Hanscom Field's 'Taxiway November'. A final statement from Massport is expected after Tuesday's HFAC meeting. That meeting is scheduled to be livestreamed by Bedford TV. 

Bedford's Library Trustees discussed further reopening plans, fines, masks, and an exciting new digital resource for cardholders.

Dot's Reading Room shared a recent article in The Conversation that dovetails with the Town's draft report on hazard mitigation and municipal vulnerability.

From Beacon Hill, State Senator Mike Barrett reported on the FY22 Senate budget that is on its way to conference committee before heading to Governor Baker's desk.

School News
Jonathan A. Harutunian has been named principal of John Glenn Middle School, beginning on July 1; current principal Kevin Tracey will become principal at Reading High School.

The School Committee's annual evaluation of Superintendent Philip Conrad was presented during Tuesday's meeting; later Conrad spoke about post-pandemic safeguards for the coming school year.

Half of the elementary school students invited to participate in summer classes have accepted, with significantly lower rates at JGMS and BHS.

Excessive heat and humidity prompted an unexpected half-day for  Bedford students on June 8.

Beford Youth Lacrosse defeated the visiting team from Bedford, NH, in the first Battle of Bedford.

Thanks to Twitter feeds posted by @bedfordsoftball and @Bucs_Baseball for photographs and basic details about the final game in the softball team's unbeaten season, plus the baseball team's semifinal win in the DCL tournament and celebrating Senior Night.

School Resource Officer Sgt, Jeff Wardwell will retire on Friday, after a 32-year career with the Bedford Police Department.

Three Bedford churches continue to offer remote services: St. Paul's Episcopal Church ~  10 am services are live-streamed each week.  First Parish, Unitarian Universalist continues to Zoom its 10 am Sunday morning services. Visit each church's website for participation links.  First Church of Christ, Congregational provides a recorded service on their Vimeo Channel at 8 am and on Bedford Television at 10 am on Sunday morning.

Two Bedford churches have resumed in-person services: Lutheran Church of the Savior holds services in the Church sanctuary at 8 & 9:45 am each Sunday, and in addition, continues to live stream the 9:45 am service on Facebook with access from www.lcsavior.org.  According to its website, St. Michael Parish, opened its sanctuary for Mass on June 20, under stringent guidelines, including a limit to the number of participants in the pews at each Mass. Individuals who are at high risk due to age, medical condition, etc. are urged to please continue watching Mass on Catholic TV
