CROTON LIKELY TO GET ITS FIRST ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS

We did it! A banner that says “We’re Charging Toward Our Future” with an image of an electric bus is publicly displayed at the entrance of the School bus depot on Route 129. Congratulations to all residents of the Croton Harmon School District, our partners at Mothers Out Front, all supportive stakeholders, the School Board and School administration. In the recent May 18 budget vote, voters chose electric buses overwhelmingly over fossil fuel buses. The three electric bus propositions collectively received a 73.7% approval. We also had Proposition 1 for two fossil fuel buses, and the three electric bus propositions had a contingency on Proposition 1. That proposition passed by a “Yes” vote of 61.2%. Some who opposed the notion of buying any more fossil fuel buses voted against Proposition 1 (Croton100 recommended a “No” vote), while some saw it as a pathway to electric buses and a way to appease the School and voted “Yes.” By analyzing the vote counts, we predict that a standalone fossil fuel bus proposal would have been defeated – we hope this means that the School District will never again buy a fossil fuel vehicle. For the 270 voters who opposed electric buses, we hope you will keep an open mind and come to appreciate the multiple benefits of modernizing student transportation.

CURE100 RELEASES BEST (BUS ELECTRIFICATION FOR STUDENT TRANSPORTATION) FRAMEWORK

To accelerate the needed transition to electric school buses, CURE100 is pleased to announce a new BEST (Bus Electrification for School Transportation) framework to help School Districts. The tool allows for easy and customizable comparison of electric school buses and fossil fuel buses. It automatically produces graphical charts of Total Cost of Ownership and Cumulative Carbon Savings (in any zip code in the country). It also serves as a repository of resources to convince School officials, transportation staff and the voting public about the benefits of electric school buses in a quantified manner. The framework is available free of charge at https://cure100.org/resources. BEST will be demonstrated in the Electric School Bus webinar on June 17 (see below).

BRING ELECTRIC BUSES TO YOUR TOWN

The webinar is co-hosted by Sierra Club and New York League of Conservation Voters, in partnership with CURE100, Mothers Out Front, Bedford 2030, Sustainable Westchester and Sustainable Hudson Valley. Panelists will discuss clean air and healthy rides, funding solutions, case studies and Q&A. Patty Buchanan will represent CURE100/Croton100 and demonstrate the BEST (Bus Electrification for Student Transportation) framework. YORKTOWN100 ACTIVITIES

On May 10, Yorktown100 held a virtual community meeting on the CURE100 Carbon Tracker App. The presentation was a detailed explanation on how to calculate a household carbon assessment and steps that can be taken to improve it!

Our next meeting is on June 14 from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m., entitled “The Charge of the EVs.” We will look at what’s new in electric cars - prices are down, range is up and home charging stations make it easier to plug in! For more information, visit https://yorktown100.cure100.org/.

50% GHG REDUCTION BY 2030 IS DOABLE

CURE100's goal is to cut global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 50% by 2030 in keeping with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s 2018 report. Recently, President Biden took CURE100's mission national by announcing an identical goal. But is it doable? How? Attend this seminar hosted by Care for Creation to find out! Zoom link here.

CROTON100 IS SUPPORTING SAFE TRAVEL FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS

We endorse the community-wide “Slow Down Croton” campaign to bring awareness of the importance of adhering to speed limits, traffic signs, courtesy to others on our passageways and prioritizing safety on our roads and sidewalks.

Reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2040 requires safe streets that we share with carbon-free transportation. Croton100 supports the Village of Croton’s Bicycle Pedestrian Committee’s mission to maintain and improve accessibility to the Village’s streets for cyclists and walkers, young and old.

Se we urge you, Slow Down Croton, give way to zero-emission travelers!

CROTON100 SOCIAL MEDIA SEEKS POSTERS

Hey CURE100! My name’s Jolie Wasserman and I’m the Croton100 social media coordinator! This summer, I’m going to Israel for a nine-week internship so I need your help keeping our social media full of fun and sustainable content. I will send you the Instagram logistics so you can post directly from the account.
If interested, please email socialmedia@croton100.com or text 814-325-0621. I’ll be doing an example vlog takeover to kickoff our summer of sustainability. My blog will include my sustainable vegetarian diet, my walk/bus ride to my internship, and other day-to-day sustainable practices. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
