BOAT PARADE RECAP IN THE NEW HAVEN REGISTER
On June 19, 1865, Union Soldiers reached Galveston, TX, with news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War securing freedom for all formerly enslaved people. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of Black Excellence, resilience and community. In West Haven, Councilwoman Robbin Watt Hamilton (District 5) and Councilwoman Trenee McGee (District 7) have been key organizers.

An Indigenous Writers of Connecticut panel discussion took place June 3, 2021. It was presented by the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in partnership with the New Haven Museum, as part of the 2021 national event known as "The Big Read."

Pictured Above: Ruth Garby Torres, Panelist (West Haven)

"I write when I think there is something important to say," Ruth Torres began. Describing herself as "a bit nerdy," she shared an opinion piece she wrote seven years ago titled, "Six things you did not know about the federal acknowledgement of Indian tribes," published in the Connecticut Mirror on June 3, 2014 (an exact anniversary!). #1 on the list?

There really are tribes east of the Mississippi still alive today.

Torres went on to explain how their distinct histories survived, despite having their tribal identities and sovereignty challenged by centuries of annihilation and assimilation. Moderator Siobhan Senier a professor at the University of New Hampshire, reinforced this point in her introduction, asserting, "the First People are very much here."

For the panel event, Torres prepared a map representing the five contemporary tribes in what is now known as Connecticut (see image above), showing where their reservations are located.

Each tribe had a writer represented on the panel, as reviewed in the New Haven Independent. The audience commented, "It's inspiring to hear these strong voices!" and, "loving your presentation, Thank You all so much." Did You Know?

This calendar starts and ends in the Summer, covering the 2021-22 school year. In the process of putting it together, artist Libby Earle discovered that the Lone Sailor replica, featured for November, was donated by the father of Arlene Painter, who manages the West Haven Veterans Museum and Learning Center! That caption reads: The Lone Sailor, a tribute to all the personnel of the sea services, is a replica of the 1987 original in Washington, DC. The statue in Old Grove Park was donated by residents and Navy veteran, Marty DeGrand.

In other months you will see West Haven's cherished seaside views and traditions depicted, such as the fireworks at Savin Rock, playing bocce while squirrels look on, remembering loved ones while sitting on Old Grove Park's memorial benches, and enjoying seafood at Stowe's. Each calendar costs $20, and all proceeds (minus the printing costs) will be donated to the Museum, which was hit hard by the effects of COVID-19. ORDER by June 18th to get one!

Only in West Haven...

Our Memorial Day parade was one of the best around, attracting residents and visitors alike to honor and remember those who have fallen on the battlefield defending our country. ArtsWestCT was there with dancers from the Middle Eastern Dance Academy of CT, based out of Viva Fitness & Dance Studio. The owner of the studio, Kelvia, is actively deployed in the US armed forces. She was able to email back and forth from Jordan to be sure that her local business could support the mission.
