Time to Renew

Well guys, it is once again time to renew your membership. The quicker you do, the better the finances of the club look. Thanks for taking care of that as soon as possible.
We had a group up at the house doing our spring cleanup and repairs. Mark G. did the cooking, and we also had a beer tasting, along with some bike riding, walking and a cider tasting next door. Lots of work and lots of fun. Think about attending our fall work weekend. We continue to paint rooms, fix up the kitchen, redecorate, and convert the basement to a game room. The backyard was cleared of brush and now we have a disc golf green. We have a second disc golf unit to install and will get to that this summer.
Think about a low cost stay at the house. Hiking, biking and swimming all are activities that Stowe has to offer. Idletyme Brewery is right on the bike path—a great spot to stop at and sit outside in the Adirondack chairs and have an IPA. We need people to stay at the house to cover expenses, so save some money by staying, and also help out your club.
Golfing is just down the road at Blush Hill, which has great views of the valley. Nine holes (no cart) costs $20.

Terrific Guide to 100 ADK Hikes

The folks at Protect the Adirondacks have created a wonderful online site to explore and plan “100 terrific hikes from across the Adirondack Park outside of the High Peaks that offer hikers great rewards from stunning views and experiences in different terrains that showcase the vastness and diversity of the Adirondack landscape... that lead through great forests to mountains, waterfalls, bog and remote lakes.”
If anyone needs encouragement to choose other than the High Peaks, a member reported that the Garden parking lot was already full at 4:45am Saturday May 29.
Sorted by County [Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Saratoga, St. Lawrence, Warren & Washington] the website provides for each trail: trail descriptions, length and level of difficulty, directions to parking lots, downloadable trail maps and on-trail directions, photos at start, on-trail, and vistas. A really excellent website to plan your next hike!
For example, in Clinton County “Catamount Mountain is a very steep and challenging 1.9-mile hike to a large, wide open summit with 360-degree views.” In Warren County, “Cat Mountain is an easy going 3-mile hike in the mountains west of Lake George above Bolton Landing” or “Peaked Mountain, a 6.8-mile hike (round trip) winds along the shoreline of Thirteenth Lake, passes by Peaked Mountain Pond and beaver meadows, en route to a wonderful rocky summit with terrific views the south and west of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness and beyond.”

Notes from Capital District Ski Council monthly meeting 05/05/2021

The meeting was called to order by President Jim Tunney.
The treasurer was unable to attend, but submitted a report showing a balance of $7632.77 in the checking account and $4186.72 in the money market account.
Discussion focused on the changes to the ski industry particularly as they pertain to the inclusion of many ski resorts, nationwide, in the EPIC, IKON and INDY pass programs. Many of those mountains previously provided discount ski days to Council members, but it seems unlikely they will going forward.
It was suggested that contacting the National Ski Federation would assist in discerning what other Ski Councils are doing to adapt to the changes in the industry. Ways to support the year-round activities of the mountains and the member clubs seems important. To that end improvement of the Ski Council web page and Facebook was discussed. Previously college members of the Council had worked as webmasters, but it is necessary to determine a consistent method of sharing schedules and information between the Council and all of the member clubs. It is also necessary to devise a method for obtaining information, from mountains within the region, for publication.
It was also suggested that a questionnaire be devised to gather information from member clubs regarding what they would like the Council to provide.
Schenectady Wintersports Club May Board Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President John Bidell and opened with a report made by Treasurer Don Streed.
Don provided detailed profit/loss and balance sheet reports to all board members for review, prior to the meeting. Essentially, April 2021 was a break-even month.
Ellen Bidell reported that group reservations are being made, but there are still available dates for vaccinated individuals to rent rooms at the Clubhouse. As VT covid regulations change/loosen updates to Clubhouse policies will be advertised.
Karen Simmons reported on the 05/05/21 Capital District Ski Council meeting (see article).
John Rack reported that a group of hikers gathered on Mother’s Day at Lake Shore Farms. An email to hikers requesting suggestions for future hikes resulted in no response.
Sue Knapik that there were 7 in attendance at the Monday night paddling.
Bill Kornrumpf and other members of the house committee discussed the upcoming work weekend. With many indoor and outdoor projects on the list there will be jobs for anyone who attends during the Wednesday - Sunday event.
John suggested making plans for a summer picnic. Perhaps a picnic/hike at Thatcher Park or a gathering at Kiwanis Park with the Monday paddlers. More discussion will follow.
