Tuesday 22nd June, 2021

Kia ora whānau,
While the weather has been VERY frosty and chilly over recent days; last Friday we enjoyed keeping warm in our cosy, comfy PJs and slippers!  Thank you to the School Council for organising a fun Friday PJ Day  ... it's always nice to be able to wear your pyjamas in the day time!

The term is really flying far too fast.  It's been jam packed with awesome hands on learning with lots of trips to learn about the great adventurers who settled in our beautiful land; Aotearoa, New Zealand.  The children have learnt about their voyages, why they came to settle here, what life was like and have heard stories of our local history.

Year 4 - 6 Student Led Learning Conferences are on June 30th and July 1st.
We continue with our student led approach, where with the support of the teacher, your child will share with you proud learning, current strengths and next steps.  As part of the Learning Conference process the reflection booklet has been sent home; this is a great chance to have a discussion with your child on what is going well in their learning, the playground and friendships, and identify success and challenges.   Please send the reflection booklet back by Thursday June 24th.
The Year 1 - 3 Anniversary Learning Conferences are also taking place on Thursday July 1st - reflection booklets for those who are scheduled for this round of conferences has been sent home too.

Staff Only Day - On June 25th staff will be participating in a Professional Learning Day.  The school will be closed for students on June 25th.

Have a wonderful week,

The Bradford Team
Technology Learning...and so much more!
Mrs Jackson has shared below the learning and opportunities the children have been focussing on over past weeks; growing their knowledge, skills of collaboration, planning, prediction and evaluation.

Room 1 and 2 are learning all about Stop Motion and are beginning to get ready to make their own movie!  This project will continue into Term 3.  They have been creating some stages for their show and are beginning to make characters.  The children have investigated how the show Pingu was made and as this is the technology they will be using to create their own movie.

Room 4 and 5 have been discovering the technological processes involved when creating and testing models.  They have discovered what shape of hulls are the best for boats by creating their own boats and adapting them to withstand a rocky lake (water tub).  Last week they had a great time making catapults and after making a base model they could investigate how moving parts of the catapult had an effect on how far or how high the marshmallows flew.  Room 4 are now learning in digital technology how to use Google Slides for their presentations.

Room 6 have had the wonderful opportunity to be involved in The Wonder Project.  This is a nationwide project designed and supported by engineers around the country to get children involved in some hands on technology.  Room 6 have been learning what makes rockets fly and also about Newtons Laws of Physics.  They have had a test run at flying their own rockets adjusting water and pressure during the testing to see which combinations made the rockets fly the best.

Zones of Regulation

LIFE IS 10% WHAT HAPPENS TO US AND 90% HOW WE REACT TO IT.
  -CHARLES SWINDOLL

It is wonderful to hear and see the children picking up and using the concepts of the Zones of Regulation we have been learning about at school and that they are also being used at home.  There are two main parts to the Zones:
1) Understanding and recognising emotions
2) Regulating emotions using personalised strategies (toolkit)

The main concepts and goals of the Zones of Regulation:.
  • Identifying our emotions and levels of alertness
  • Understand our feelings within different contexts and situations
  • Self-regulation: Knowing all emotions are valid and normal.  Being aware of what different emotions feel and look for you.  Being able to use strategies to achieve the preferred state of alertness (zone) for a situation.
  • Effective tools to use for self-regulation / how and when to use them: Various techniques and strategies that help achieve emotional regulation and manage strong emotions
  • Size of the problem: Learning to identify the size of the problem and matching our reaction.  Problem-solve positive solutions.
  • Expected behaviour vs unexpected behaviour: Using our social thinking to understand what are expected and unexpected behaviours or reactions in different contexts.
  • Understand behaviours we exhibit influence others thoughts and feelings towards us - how our behaviour affects the thoughts and feelings of the people around us (comfortable or uncomfortable thoughts)
Many whanau are also using the language and concepts of the Zones of Regulation at home.  The Zones can be represented in many ways, below are some ideas you might like to use at home to have a visual representation at home too.

You can read more about the Zones of Regulation here:
https://www.zonesofregulation.com/learn-more-about-the-zones.html

There is also an app available for children and families to use together which teaches how to use strategies or tools to regulate. Given that everyone's needs and preferences are unique, you can explore various regulation techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports, building a toolbox of methods to use to regulate and move between zones.
