Scouting and COVID-19 Restrictions
There are no changes to QBSI 7.15 this week.

Please implement the App as a “business” for your Formation to enable rapid registration of visitors: Check In Qld app | Queensland Government (covid19.qld.gov.au).

Please continue to meet the requirements described within QBSI 7.15 to help mitigate the community risks of COVID-19 outbreaks.

COVID-19 and Africa
In 2019, we did an overland tour through south western Africa from Zimbabwe through Botswana, Nambidia and into South Africa. We had an African tour guide who was a wonderful person. We decided to reach out to him to see how he was faring with COVID-19. He lives in Zimbabwe.

His response: “This email brings a tear into my eye. I have not gone through such kind of pain and suffering in my adult life like now. For a long time, I have been lucky to be able to work and earn a living and help others. But now, I cannot help myself. It’s daily needs like food, paying utility bills and being able to see a doctor and get treatment. If our country economy was sound and good, it was the most ideal time for the government to reach out. Some say this idea is far fetched.  We are still under the Covid restrictions. Tourism business is at standstill. We haven’t been hinted on getting back to work soon.”

We have helped him but my point though, is that we do not recognise how we have largely been untouched by COVID-19 and we continue to focus on the material things whilst others are doing it really tough!! There is nothing about this in the media!

Operoo – migration of the Groups using the original stand-alone Operoo
We have had Operoo accessible to all Scout Groups for some time now. There are still 12 Scout Groups who were on the stand-alone version of Operoo prior to the roll out of Operoo by Scouts Queensland and Operoo, the company, is frustratingly slow in migrating those Groups across to the version rolled out to all other Scout Groups.

To address this issue, we are working with one of those Scout Groups to download their history into Excel and then set up a new instance within the Scouts Queensland environment and ask parents to redirect their profiles to this instance. We will let you know how this goes.

Operoo Continuous Improvement Group
There is now an active Operoo user group within MS Teams and that is a terrific way to share tips and to explore ideas. We encourage Groups to assign a representative to get involved in that Group.

With Operoo, the company, bringing out new features from time-to-time, we would like to formalise an Operoo Continuous Improvement Group that can examine these changes together with suggestions arising from our User Group to improve the way in which we can streamline the operation of Scout Groups.

Simpler Scout Travel Arrangements between Queensland and New South Wales
Discussions have been initiated between Scouts Qld and Scouts NSW to simplify limited travel arrangements between the two states. Our C5 “Event Advice and Approval” form is currently required to be sent to the District Commissioner of the District in which the event (camp etc) is being held. To that end we have a simple postcode to District Commissioner email address listing available on our website to facilitate the user identifying the host District Commissioner: District and Region listing | Scouts Queensland (scoutsqld.com.au)

The limited travel arrangements that we are considering would apply with Scouts NSW’s North Coast Region (east of Great Dividing Range and south to Port Macquarie) and North West Region (west of Great Dividing Range and south to Tamworth). The reciprocal arrangements would be put in place for Scouts NSW travelling to Gold Coast, South Eastern, Moreton, Brisbane South, Darling Downs, Northern Moreton Bay, Suncoast Regions. It is probable that Scouts NSW will send their equivalent of the C5 to the Scouts Qld District Commissioners using the link on our website to identify the DC email address and Scouts Qld will send the C5 to the relevant Region Commissioner in NSW. We are thinking of expanding the Scouts Qld District and Region listing to include the postcodes for the two NSW Regions and email addresses of the two Region Commissioners.

There is more work to be put into formalising this arrangement and altering QBSI 2.9.

Comments on this concept welcome….

Relocation of Brisbane Gang Show from Schonell Theatre to Draney Theatre, Marist College
Brisbane Gang Show has performed at the University of Queensland Schonell Theatre for many years but only a matter of weeks ago, the University advised that the Theatre could no longer be used because of asbestos concerns within the Theatre.

Arrangements have now been made for the Gang Show to perform at Draney Theatre within the Marist College, 142 Frasers Road, Ashgrove.  This requires a change to the advertising and ticketing which are being worked through as a matter of priority.  Opening night remains Friday 2nd July.

Further details are included elsewhere within this Newsletter.

Preparing a Scouts' Own

A new resource, Preparing a Scouts’ Own has been developed to support those involved with this important area. In Scouting, the principle of Duty to god considers the relationship to one’s spiritual life and spiritual reality. Spiritual development refers to the development of a person’s beliefs regarding their purpose in life, connection to others, place in the world around them, while respecting the spiritual choices of others. One way it occurs in Scouting is through participating in Scout’s Owns, which allows young people to develop, question and refine their spirituality.

A Scouts’ Own is an activity that helps us reflect on our connection with nature and the world around us. We reflect on our place in the world and with our community. Scouts’ Owns are not religious services or observances but are a gathering of Scouts in small or large groups. In smaller groups, Scouts are able to get involved, share their experiences, and see that spirituality is something that affects them and gives meaning and direction to their lives. In large groups Scouts can enjoy a collective experience, perhaps celebrating the shared values of Scouting and the impact this has on their lives.

A key resource to tap into for the planning of a Scouts’ Own, is the Internal Compass. You can find a version outlined for each age section on the Scouts Australia Website. The new resource can be downloaded here

EKKA Design Competition Winner

Congratulations to Charlie from Indooroopilly Scout Group for his winning entry to the Scouts Queensland 2021 EKKA Fruit and Vegetable Stand Design Competition.

The judges were impressed with his inclusion of the brand logo and gumtree effects and his imaginative use of the gumtree characters throughout the display.

Charlies ideas will now be transformed into a scaled design that can be recreated in seasonal fruit and vegetables for display at the Show.

Bravo Charlie!

Cuboree Leaders are Ready - Are you?

Cuboree is not far away now!

The Cuboree Training Weekend took place this weekend with Team Leaders from the subcamp villages, activities, logistics and our Cuboree Pack Leaders all converging on the Rocky Creek campsite in Landsborough.  We did some team building and getting to know our greater team.  We walked the site, for many, this was their first peek and we worked hard and laughed even harder.

I am looking forward to a fantastic Cuboree, it is full of Leaders who are in it for the Cub Scouts (and in this case Scouts). Like all major events we would love some more Leaders and this year Cuboree will be opening applications for day Leaders. It is a great opportunity for Leaders who want to help but can not take time off. Applications will be advertised soon.

Who runs the world?

CUBS!!!!

Gone Home

Theodore “Ted” Logan has been called home at 45 years young.  Ted joined Cubs at Imbil Mary Valley Scout Group, Gympie District, in 1984 and continued on to receive his Queen's Scout Award in 1995.  Ted rode his pushbike from Gympie towards Tin Can Bay and turned off, heading for Maryborough, he camped the night there at a Scout ground and rode back to Gympie on what's now the old Bruce Highway.

Ted became a Scout Leader at Alice River Scout Group in 1998 and in 2012, Ted was welcomed back to Imbil Mary Valley Scout Group as a Badge Examiner/Adult Helper. He loved his Scouting years and delighted in being able to show his SES mates how to tie the knots they needed to use.

Ted leaves behind his 3 sisters and 2 nieces and was farewelled in Gympie on 28 May. Imbil Mary Valley Leaders, most of his old Scout Patrol, BP Guild members, old classmates and SES volunteers attended. Our condolences to his family.
