Be an Ally to our Indigenous Peoples

Written by Maureen Wideman, AVP, Teaching and Learning
The Teaching and Learning Centre extends its heartfelt sorrow and condolences to all families and survivors from Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation impacted by discovery of the unmarked graves of the 215 missing children from the Kamloops Residential School. Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their homes and communities throughout the province. We recently learned that some of the children in the unmarked graves are from our Stó:lō communities. The TLC stands in solidarity with our survivors, families, and communities impacted by the residential school system.
Our Indigenous people are in mourning and many Canadians are only now waking up to the genocide that included residential schools. Thousands of children lost. What can we do? ...read more

COVID restrictions are slowly being lifted so this summer promises to offer us a bit more flexibility in your plans. Remember that your Teaching and Learning Centre doesn’t rest over the summer so put a little time aside (on the rainy days) to attend a workshop or two. A recent survey completed by the Canadian Digital Learning Research Association found that in the summer of 2020, 99.5% of instructors had online teaching PD options recommended or provided to them, “which suggests that institutions placed high priority on training faculty to teach online over the summer months.” The report mentions that 94% of participants declared that these were “effective professional development options” (2020). Over the summer, your TLC offers training to prepare for hybrid and HyFlex teaching on campus among other workshops. Be sure to browse through our how-to videos and check TLC Events for upcoming workshops.
