Celebrating Youth Poets

June 10th, 2021

Dear Friends in Poetry,

To introduce young poets to the world is a great pleasure.  This past year, in lieu of our annual, printed youth anthology of poetry, we tried something new.  During National Poetry Month, California Poets in the Schools published poetry broadsides from thirty, K-12 youth.  Students from throughout California were invited to submit poems to the project.  A graphic designer then paired each selected poem with art.  Selected poets were mailed copies of their broadside for framing, and were invited to participate in a live, master class with Juan Felipe Herrera, 21st U.S. Poet Laureate, on Zoom - a significant honor.  CalPoets published one of these broadsides each day throughout the month of April, and now we invite you to view all completed broadsides here.

When youth poets have the opportunity to be published in a professional manner, we witness an incredible boost in confidence, pride, and connection to the writing process.  Through publication, students create tangible memories that can be shared with future generations and can build bridges with audiences that hear these student voices for the first time.

Warm thanks to broadside editors Magdalena Rose Montagne and Brennan DeFrisco, as well as Fernando Albert Salinas - graphic designer.

Take a moment to enjoy, share, and celebrate all 30 of these unique works of art.
