‘Fab Four’ of J-school retire

With a combined 60 years of teaching experience, (from left) Professors Susan Knight, Linda Lumsden, William Schmidt and Nancy Sharkey retired from the School of Journalism and earned faculty emeritus status from the university. “They have not only taught me a lot but shared their knowledge about journalism to thousands of students and impacted so many lives,” said Paloma Boykin (’08), academic adviser. Read story.

     

 

High school workshop returns virtually for 2021

After the pandemic canceled the 2020 Donald W. Carson Journalism Diversity Workshop for Arizona High School Students, the program returned this year with a “highly motivated” group eager to learn about reporting, writing, photography, video and podcasting. Administrative Assistant Andrés Domínguez (’13) co-directed the virtual workshop with Julia Blumberg, a master’s student. Read story.

 

Committee to Protect Journalists
to receive 2021 Zenger award 

For its role in defending the rights and safety of journalists around the world, the Committee to Protect Journalists will receive the 2021 Zenger Award for Press Freedom from the School of Journalism. Read story and buy tickets for the Friday, Oct. 1, luncheon.

 

Savannah Guthrie celebrates 10 years as ‘Today’ show co-anchor

Savannah Guthrie (’93) celebrated her 10-year anniversary as the co-host of NBC’s “Today” show. Guthrie, who worked at Tucson’s KVOA-TV early in her career, became co-anchor after the departure of Ann Curry. Read L.A. Times story and watch the celebration.

 

Hall of Fame nominations needed

The School of Journalism is accepting nominations for its second Hall of Fame induction, set for spring 2022. Describe in 350 words or less why the candidate is worthy, and email the submission to Mike Chesnick, career strategies and outreach manager. Previous nominees not selected for the inaugural class are automatically eligible. More details

• The School of Journalism is inviting applications for one full-time or two part-time assistant professors of practice to oversee its video journalism program and broadcast/podcast studios. Apply here.

Prof. Celeste González de Bustamante and History Prof. Katherine Morrissey received a Mellon grant through University Libraries to create an online platform of bilingual primary resources that includes historical newspapers from Tucson, Nogales, Douglas and Bisbee in Arizona, and Agua Prieta, Naco and Nogales in Sonora.

The Center for University Education Scholarship named Prof. Jessica Retis as a CUES Distinguished Fellow for her project “Bilingual Journalism Education in the United States: Implementation and Assessment.” The fellowship includes three years of funding. 

Prof. Jeannine Relly participated in the virtual Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy on June 5-10.

• Prof. David Cuillier spoke about the shifting news industry for Arizona Humanities and the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. Watch the video.

• Adjunct instructor Fred Brock’s book “Secrets,” the third novel in The Seven trilogy, is out. It’s a cross-genre thriller involving kidnapping, murders and UFOs.

• Joe Sharkey’s non-fiction book “Above Suspicion” was turned into a film of the same name. The film, starring Emilia Clarke, was finally released in the United States in May.

• Ann-Eve Pedersen died May 29 at 55. She rose from reporter to editor at the Tucson Citizen and Arizona Daily Star and taught JOUR 205 as an adjunct instructor in the early 2000s. Read adjunct Cathy Burch's obit for the Arizona Daily Star and former adjunct Blake Morlock's appreciation for the Tucson Sentinel.

Brittny Mejia (’14) of the Los Angeles Times was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the local reporting category for an investigation into the Los Angeles County medical system with co-nominee Jack Dolan.

Sam McNeil ('14 M.A.), an Associated Press video journalist, was part of a team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in investigative reporting. He contributed to two of six stories in the AP's investigation of China's state secrecy.

John D’Anna (’83) accepted a job as a senior news director for investigations and enterprise at the Santa Rosa (California) Press Democrat after 27 years at the Arizona Republic. He is on the school’s Journalism Advisory Council.

Jeremy Levin (’95) won his 10th Sports Emmy, this time for top weekly studio show. He’s the coordinating producer for “NBA on TNT.”

Shane Bacon (’06) is the co-host of “Golf Today” on the Golf Channel. Bacon also co-hosts the “Get a Grip podcast” with PGA player Max Houma and “The Clubhouse with Shane Bacon” podcast.

Nick Smith (’06) recently released a podcast with the BBC called “Sneakernomics” about the history of sneakers. The podcast is a spin-off of his book “Kicks.” Listen to the podcast.

Jorge Encinas (’16, M.A.) is the new managing editor of the Capital Journal newspaper in Pierre, South Dakota. He previously worked as a reporter at the Green Valley News and Sahuarita Sun.

Malena Larson (’16) is a talent booker for “The Chris Salcedo Show” after previous work as a production assistant for the Fox Business Network.

Saul Bookman (’18, M.A.) was promoted to director of digital content for Bally Sports Arizona.

Natalia Navarro (’18, M.A.) landed a new job as news anchor at San Francisco’s KQED News, an NPR station. She previously worked at Colorado Public Radio in Denver.

Nick Smallwood (’20, M.A.) is a videographer at Northern Arizona University.

Jesse Tellez (’20) is a digital producer at the Arizona Daily Star.

Mickaela Elich (’21) is a reporter at CBS2 News in Boise, Idaho.
