1. A new Juneteenth celebration
Today, in the shadow of the mountain on whose top the Ku Klux Klan was rebirthed in 1915 and whose face bears the world’s largest memorial to the Confederacy, Elaine Vaughn (pictured above center) is helping to carve a new legacy. She’s on the planning committee for the city of Stone Mountain’s first-ever Juneteenth Festival.
Officially recognized in most states and a paid county holiday in DeKalb County, Juneteenth is the annual observance that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S.—June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally heard that the Civil War had ended, more than two years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had made them free.

2. South Georgia's 'Battle of the Murals'
Cities across the world have turned to public art to tell stories, enhance civic pride, and to welcome visitors to their communities.
Indeed, the street mural scene in Atlanta is well documented and has gotten international attention. But, did you know there is a "Battle of the Murals" happening in South Georgia?
In his travels across the state, journalist Charles Seabrook happened upon a friendly feud between two small towns with a combined population of less than 6,000.
In 2005, former Gov. Sonny Purdue proclaimed Lakeland in Lanier County (population 3,400 and 30 murals) to be “Georgia’s Historic Mural City.”
Not to be outshined, 100 miles to the west in Miller County, Colquitt (pop. 2,000, 16 murals) persuaded the 2006 General Assembly to declare their community “Georgia’s First Mural City."
Colquitt is home to a massive piece titled “The Peanut Farmer,” painted on the side of a 100-foot tall Birdsong Peanuts silo, claiming to be the U.S.’s largest mural. (Above)
In a recent "Travels with Charlie" column, Seabrook visits the murals in Lakeland and Colquitt to learn more about the Millennium Murals project, started in 1999 with funding from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Georgia Mural Trail project, created by Hapefill, Ga artist John Christian, and the history and culture these murals bring to life.

3. Where to eat now
Just because some of us may prefer to eat earlier than others (cough, cough), doesn't mean we can't be in the know about the metro area's bustling dining scene.
Atlanta Senior Life rounded up some of the latest dining news so you can impress your kids or your friends next time you are asked about where you want to go.
⚫ Savi Provisions is opening a gas station with high-end food in Buckhead.
⚫ Ford Fry's popular Tex Mex spot Superica is setting up another metro Atlanta location, this time in the Ashford Lane complex at 4500 Olde Perimeter Way in Dunwoody (photo above).
⚫ Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q has announced that a third location of its popular smoked meats joint will open at Brookhaven Station in the summer of 2021.
⚫ The Blue Plate is planning a June opening in Dunwoody at 5000 Winters Chapel Road “where the old Empire Pizza was,” according to owner Sade Williams, who told the Reporter, “I would describe our menu as soul-Southern comfort food with a modern twist.”

4. Looking for a local getaway?
It's only Monday, but there's no better time to start thinking about your next vacation, even if it's a local one.
