13 June 2021

So we are now in our 101st year. The first meeting of our club took place on 7 June 1921, at the YMCA, 150 Willis St. You will all appreciate that this year 7 June was the Monday of Queen's Birthday weekend so I think we can be forgiven for bringing our celebration forward by two weeks.

Rotary has been in New Zealand for 100 years, a hundred years of service and endeavour, touching lives in many places. Our values remain as they were in 1921 - "Service Above Self" - but much else has changed. We look ahead as well as back, which is one reason why we were very happy to have representatives of Rotoract, the Skilled Migrant Programme, and Conservation Volunteers with us on 24 May.

On that occasion I announced a number of grants to mark our centennial. These will be paid out over the next 2-3 years and stand in the fine tradition of our club assisting the less fortunate in our society. The grantees are:

The Akina Foundation
CSS - Disability Action
The Wellington City Mission

These are in addition to our support for global, zone, national and district programmes - End Polio Now, Rotary Give Every Child A Future, Forests of Peace and Remembrance, Mana Tangata, The Wellington Children's Hospital, and more.

In aggregate this club is granting upwards of half a million dollars to social and environmental needs to mark our centenary.

We have some other initiatives in the fire. We are always on the lookout for new opportunities and that means we always need to be thinking about fund raising opportunities too. The two go together. We can only give away what we have.

Elsewhere in this newsletter are details of our club Changeover on Monday 28 June in Wellington and of District 9940 Changeover in Palmerston North on Saturday 3 July. Please join me in welcoming new Club President Joy Tracey on the first date and new district governor (and club member) Mark Wheeler on the second.
The speaker - Peter Hill - Where are all the logs going?
Why is there a shortage of
structural timber in NZ?

Peter is the Vice President of the NZ Institute of Forestry and Past President of the NZ Forest Owners Association. He has spent all his life working in the forest industry and, although semi-retired, he still serves on a number of industry bodies as well as providing consultancy services. Peter started work in the NZ Forest Service and then moved on to work for a number of different NZ forestry companies. Of his 45 years in the industry Peter has spent 20 years traveling offshore, developing log and lumber markets for New Zealand forest owners.

Professor Iorns believes that there is a need for more national guidance and standards, and the finding necessary to support their application.

Five Minute Talk - Skilled Migrant Programme
NIcky Riddiford spoke about the club's extensive involvement in the programme and introduced the current participants. The visit to our lunch marked the beginning of this mentoring round for those skilled migrants by club members.

Quarterly Newsletter about Give Every Child a Future

The newsletter reports on fundraising and the Peace Leadership Forum. Given the issue of vaccine hesitancy here. Members will be interested in the report on the training of health workers for the project. As well as giving the vaccines safely, the health workers are crucial in the community for providing  accurate information about the vaccine. As well, this process has to be effective across a wide range of different islands and cultures.
