Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #504 - 08 June 2021

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to
share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

08 June, from Ku-ring-gai command: Your easy guide as to when to call police

08 June, from The Hills command: Do you have to indicate when reversing out of a driveway onto the roadway?

Short answer - No, as any signal would be misleading and potentially dangerous - as it would be the reverse of what may be the intention of the driver.

ROAD RULES 2014 - REG 48 Giving a right change of direction signal

(1) Before a driver changes direction to the right, the driver must give a right change of direction signal in accordance with rule 49 for long enough to comply with subrule (2) and, if subrule (3) applies to the driver, that subrule. : Maximum penalty--20 penalty units.

Note : "Changes direction to the right" is defined in rule 45(3).

08 June, from Ku-ring-gai command: What should happen in the below situation?
A. The pedestrian must stop crossing, move back onto the footpath and wait for the vehicle to drive past.
B. The driver should use their horn to alert the pedestrian that they are turning, and drive around the pedestrian when safe to do so.
C. The pedestrian should speed up to cross the road at jogging pace. This is to ensure that the flow of traffic is maintained.
D. The driver must give way to the pedestrian crossing the road.

Image via NSW Centre for Road Safety: To find out more about road rules, visit here.

The correct answer is D.
As a driver, you must give way to pedestrians:
  • • at pedestrian and children’s crossings
  • • when turning at intersections
  • • when doing a U-turn
  • • in shared zones
  • • when entering or leaving a driveway.
Always slow down and be prepared to stop if there’s any danger of colliding with a pedestrian, even if they do not have right of way or are jaywalking (crossing the road illegally).
08 June, from Ku-ring-gai command: About 11.50pm on the 4 June 2021, Northern Sydney Highway Patrol and General Duties Police from Ku-ring-gai PAC stopped three modified vehicles on the Pacific Highway Kangaroo Point (near Brooklyn) due to their manner of driving along the stretch of the Pacific Highway between Cowan and Brooklyn.
Police detected a number of defect breaches for non-compliance on all three vehicles. All three drivers received vehicle defect notices and infringements for "use light vehicle not comply with standard - other $116 and Use light vehicle not comply noise standard $194.

07 June, from Traffic & Highway Patrol command: There are several ways to transport a fridge safely…….and then there is this guy
About 3pm on Saturday 29th May 2021, City East Eastern Suburbs Highway Patrol were patrolling the Bondi Junction area when they sighted the fridge…..and car on Oxford Street
.
Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver. Upon inspection, Police sighted a poorly designed and dangerous load restraint setup with the large fridge perched on the rear boot of the sedan. Police made sure the driver made alternative arrangements for the fridge to be transported another way before he could leave the location. The driver received an infringement notice for an unsecure load.

Dangerous and unsecure loads are a hazard to other road users and pedestrians. When transporting furniture, bulky goods, sporting goods, tools or any other item in a ute or trailer, please ensure they are secured appropriately or covered in accordance with the Road Rules 2014.

01 June, from NSW Police: Know what to do after a car crash?

01 June, from Ku-ring-gai command: Are you permitted to make a u-turn at traffic lights?
A. Yes, if there is no danger of colliding with another vehicle.
B. No, unless there is a 'u-turn permitted' sign at the intersection.
C. Yes, at all times.

Answer: B
Penalty for 'Make U-turn at intersection with traffic lights' is $272 and 2 demerit points. In a school zone, $349 and 3 demerit points.
01 June, from The Hills command: Can you legally remove your seatbelt when reversing?

ANSWER - In New South Wales, you are exempt from wearing a seat belt when reversing, unless you are a learner driver.

08 June, from Neighbourhood Watch in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: Thank you to Hornsby Shire Council.

07 June, Shared with permission from the Pymble and West Pymble Community group: Heads up: Break and Enter
My house was broken into around 11:30am today. I came home to them still in my house. Two jumped off my veranda onto my carport roof and bolted. The other guy ran down my stairs and straight past me trying to unlock the front door. He managed to unlock the door and run. Keep a look out for a white land rover with TV on the number plate and they were wearing hoodie tracksuits (one was wearing white, the other a dark colour hoodie). This was on Ryde Road (Cross Street and the Shell service Station). Keep a look out please.
07 June, from Crime Stoppers NSW: WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOSE YOUR MOBILE PHONE...
Losing our mobile phone can be very distressing, especially these days when they are so much more than ‘just’ a phone. If you lose your phone it is important to report this to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 (24/7) as you will need an EVENT NUMBER if you are claiming insurance.
REMEMBER to have your IMEI number ready. This is a serial number specific to your phone and you can find it on the box if you still have it. Otherwise, your service provider can provide this number to you. The IMEI number goes into your police report and is an identifying feature for police if your phone is ever found or recovered.
You can also report online via the Community Portal

31 May, from NSW Police Force: Last week's question answered
When two lanes reduce to one lane and there are no longer any road markings, what should happen?
A. Car B should speed up to block Car A moving across
B. Car B must give way to Car A
C. Car A should come to a complete stop, and only merge when safe to do so
D. Car A should slow down and only move across when it’s behind Car B

The correct answer is B. When you’re driving on a road and the number of lanes or lines of traffic reduces, and there are no longer any road markings, you must give way to the vehicle that’s ahead of you. This is called a zipper merge.

At 13:55-14:15, 5/6/21 Saturday, I parked my car outside 49 Turramurra Ave, near Turramurra Park, someone did a hit and run to my car, on the back right door. If you know of any details about what happened, please let me know

05 June, Shared with permission from the Thornleigh, Westleigh and Normanhurst Community group: PSA...
There has been an increase of phone scams and they are now coming up with the caller ID of Hornsby police station. My boy was scammed out of a fair chunk of money for someone who works casual at a retail store. Please talk to your families and keep up to date with the latest scams that these arseholes that need to get a real job are up to. Police are investigating.
05 June, from 9Now.nine.com.au: This article isn't about our area, but it does make a few generic points, eg the council verge doesn't belong to you - it is public land.

Woman films neighbourhood bin day altercation.
One metre -  that's how far management said the garbage bin has to move. Most of us don't give a second thought to where we put the garbage bin out each week.

04 June, Shared with permission from the Turramurra and Wahroonga Community group: Hi all [edited]
I know this is far reached. But I’m calling out to the person who hit my car on Wednesday to come forward and be honest or ANY witnesses that may have see my car being hit and the car driving off. I was parked on Stuart street off Cleveland Street in Wahroonga close by to Wahroonga Park on the Wednesday 02/06/2021 between the hours of 8.30am- 3.30pm. I work casually as a Teachers assistant at St Lucy’s school down the road. My car is bright blue Toyota Corolla 2006 and I have blue Rims so it’s not hard to miss from afar. My car was hit and the mirror has come off and unfortunately no note was left. I want to let the person who hit me know that Covid has been an extremely hard time for me and I am working as much as the work is available too me so this accident is coming out of my own expense when I already struggling. I haven’t gone though insurance as the damage is far less than my excess and I have gone though a panel beater.
Please if you were the person who hit my car. I won’t hold anything against you but I plead you to be honest and come forward and do the right thing.
04 June, from NSW Police: Do you know a learner driver who would benefit from this program?
The first Tuesday of every month officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command - NSW Police Force, with members of Fire and Rescue NSW, take part in Night Drive for Learners. A free program hosted by Australian Racing Drivers' Club and Driving Solutions.
The free program gives learner drivers the opportunity to build confidence in their driving by having 2 hours of free driving around the track at Sydney Motorsport Park. As a value add officers setup a mock RBT site where drivers can practice driving through the site and the drivers and their supervisors can ask questions of the officers. Fire and Rescue NSW drive around the track with the learners, randomly engaging their lights and sirens. Another great night last night, with an eager group of learner drivers. 03 June, from Crime Stoppers NSW: Cyberbullying - A guide to online bullying for parents and carers
Online bullying can have a devastating impact on young people. It can take many forms such as sending abusive messages, hurtful images or videos, nasty online gossip, excluding or humiliating others or creating fake accounts in someone’s name to trick or humiliate them.

Signs to watch out for:
  • 👉🏼 Being upset after using the internet or device
  • 👉🏼 Changes in personality, becoming more withdrawn, anxious, sad or angry
  • 👉🏼 Appearing lonelier or distressed
  • 👉🏼 Unexpected changes in friendship groups
  • 👉🏼 A decline in their school work
  • 👉🏼 Changes in sleep patterns
  • 👉🏼 Avoidance of school or clubs
  • 👉🏼 Declined in physical health
  • 👉🏼 Becoming secretive about online activities
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
  • Listen, think and pause – try to gauge the scale of the problem. Try to remain calm for your child.
  • Collect evidence. Take screenshots including dates and times. The evidence may be useful if the bulling behaviour continues and you need a record of how long it has been going on.
  • Consider seeking support from your child’s school.
  • If your child is being threatened, or if they indicate a wish to harm themselves, you should get professional help. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if their physical safety is at risk.

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for Tradies".

Tip#1. IDENTIFY YOUR POWER TOOLS USING AN ENGRAVER, AVAILABLE FOR LOAN FROM YOUR CRIME PREVENTION OFFICER (PH: Hornsby Police Station: 9476 9799) OR LOCAL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH. Stolen power tools are easily bought and sold at garage and car boot sales.
Tip#7. SAY ‘HI’ TO NEIGHBOURS AROUND A BUILDING SITE OR JOB. They are the eyes and ears of the community.
Tip#11. IF BEING PAID IN CASH, GO STRAIGHT TO A BANKING INSTITUTION. Preferably, don’t choose to be paid large sums of money in cash.
Tip#12. BEWARE BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVELS THE-MORNING-AFTER-THE-NIGHT-BEFORE. Does your work depend on your licence?
Tip#13. ENSURE YOU’RE PROPERLY INSURED. The builder? Owner? You? Double-check your understanding at all times, especially at handover and mile stones.

05 June, from UK Cop Humour: This is for all those who keep filling out those "What's your stripper name?" or "Which Teletubby are you?" or "Which cheese are you most closely related to?" quizzes on Social Media.
  • • What school did you go to?
  • • What was your first pet's name?
  • • What's your mum's maiden name?
  • • And whilst you're in full flow, what's your 16 digit debit card number, expiry date and security code? 🤦🏻‍♂️
