EuropePMC & ASAPbio 'Preprints 101 for authors' webinar

June 21, 2pm BST | 3pm CEST | 9am EDT | 6:30pm IST

On June 21 EuropePMC and ASAPbio will run a webinar where we'll discuss preprints and how to make your experience as a preprint author as positive as possible. ASAPbio Fellow Sumeet Pal Singh will share his perspective as a preprint author and Maria Levchenko will cover how to incorporate preprints in literature searchers using EuropePMC's preprint discovery tools.

#FeedbackASAP meeting - Growing preprint review

On July 21, ASAPbio will host the #FeedbackASAP meeting around preprint review, in partnership with DORA, HHMI and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. At the meeting, we will explore incentives toward preprint review participation and request feedback on work we have ongoing related to preprint review.

Join us to learn how you can take concrete action with new initiatives and help build cultural norms around preprint feedback. Meeting attendees can also propose and lead their own breakout sessions. Read more about the meeting at: https://asapbio.org/feedbackasap

Welcoming Osman Aldirdiri and Thabiso Motaung to the ASAPbio Board of Directors

We’re thrilled to announce two new members of the ASAPbio Board of Directors: Osman Aldirdiri, a student and researcher at the University of Khartoum, Sudan, and Thabiso Motaung, a Lecturer at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Thabiso is a 2020 ASAPbio Fellow and Osman is participating in the current cohort of the program; you can read more about them on our blog post.

Preprints in Motion podcast

Preprints in Motion is a new podcast that will discuss preprints authored by early-career researchers, learning more about the science and the authors’ experience of preprinting and academia. The podcast is hosted by ASAPbio Fellow Jonny Coates with production by Emma Wilson and editing by John Howard, and is supported by ASAPbio.

The podcast is launching on June 16 with two episodes: Episode 1 discusses lego microscopes with Bart Vos and their use as a lockdown teaching tool, Episode 2 takes a deep dive into Wikipedia and the citations used for COVID-19 articles with all 3 preprint authors. Episodes will release every first and third Wednesday of the month.

Tune in to listen on Spotify, Google podcasts, Apple podcasts and Anchor.

Meet the 2021 ASAPbio Fellows

The ASAPbio Fellows have been selected to participate in a six-month program that provides them with tools and skills to drive discussions about the productive use of preprints in the life sciences, and to become ASAPbio representatives for their communities. Each month, we feature a few of the 2021 ASAPbio Fellows so you can get to know them better. Read more about the program participants here.

Khumbuzile Bophela

I am a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pretoria. I specialize in tree health and protection. The focus of my current research is identifying the potential contamination sources of root rot pathogens (e.g. Phytophthora spp.) in citrus nurseries in South Africa.

I have the opportunity to reach a broader audience apart from my fellow science peers, which makes my work easily accessible to relevant stakeholders and has the potential to influence decisions affecting the lives of people in communities around me.

Pallavi Mathur

I am a 3rd Year PhD student at Institut Curie in the team of Bruno Goud. In my project, I am studying the role of lysosome positioning in different stages of bladder cancer.

Transparent and open communication of science is crucial within the scientific community to exchange ideas and technology but is also important to raise awareness among the non-scientific crowd about the growth in the world of science. I am motivated to contribute towards and promote an easy, accurate and simple means of scientific communication.

Ken Hallenbeck

I am Senior Scientific Researcher at Genentech Inc, working in the early discovery biochemistry department where I use robots and DNA-encoded technologies to identify peptide therapeutics.

I am keenly interested in experiments that disrupt the current scientific publication paradigm. Modern ways to share our research data quickly, clearly, and without as much work for the researcher will only speed up and democratize scientific research.
