Creative Industries Fund is investing up to £2.5 million in innovation projects as well as offering ongoing support from Innovate UK EDGE. UK registered micro and small businesses in the creative sector can apply - closes 16 June 2021.

Horizon Europe Funding for Cultural Heritage & Creative Industries
The upcoming funding in the new European research & innovation funding programme includes many opportunities for the UK cultural and creative industries, including more than 144.5m euros available for research into cultural heritage and the cultural and creative industries. Creative England Relaunch New Ideas Fund + Business Planning Grants
The New Ideas Fund offers grants of between £1-25k to creative practitioners and companies working in moving image. Business Planning Grants of up to £5k are available to support companies with the creation and implementation of business proposals and strategies.

Funding co-created collaborative partnerships between industry and academic research partners at Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. Applications invited across the full spectrum of the creative industries including new, immersive and emerging technologies.

Just Launched: Watch Covid Diaries Part Two 


The second in a three-part series, The Covid Diaries: Part Two continues to follow four Audience of the Future Demonstrator projects. Hear from the makers and creators behind Dinosaurs and Robots, Dream, Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix up and WEAVR, how they adapted to the challenges of the pandemic, and access their new ground-breaking experiences now launched and live! 

Funded by UKRI, as part of the government's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, the Audience of the Future programme explores the immersive future of the Creative Industries, with new large-scale experiences for mass audiences.

Dinosaurs and Robots is a mixed reality experience led by Factory 42, originally created for London’s Natural History Museum and Science Museum. Hear from Factory 42's Steven Stewart (CEO), Sucharita Ghosh (XR Producer) and Niccolo Temporanza (3D Artist).

Dream 'Part One' Now Released


Recently launched, later than the other part one diaries, is the first video diary from the creators behind 'Dream', featuring Sarah Ellis (Director of Digital Development) from Royal Shakespeare Company and Eleanor Whitley (Executive Producer) from Marshmallow Laser Feast, sharing how the Dream project pivoted due to Covid-19. Don't miss the CreaTech session on Dream (15 June, 2-2:40pm) at next week's CogX Festival.

Report Published: The Growing Value of XR in Healthcare in the UK 


The Growing Value of XR in Healthcare report has been created in response to the pressing need to have access to more accurate and representative intelligence and market data to help inform emerging strategies within the public and private sector in the UK.  The report findings will help government and public health services make informed decisions about future strategies to ensure the UK is in the best position to exploit the potential of XR in healthcare today.

Apply Now: Recruitment Opportunities At The Cutting-Edge Of Immersive Storytelling


Multiple roles are currently open to join the teams at StoryFutures and StoryFutures Academy, all about placing innovative storytelling at the heart of next generation immersive technologies and experiences, to fuel the growth of the sector and ensure the UK is leading the way.

Opportunities include Administrator roles within the finance and delivery teams (both closing early June) as well as to support the Festival UK 2022 project (closes 2 June). An R&D Producer is required to manage the delivery of various innovation projects (closes 13 June), along with a PR and Media Manager  for the Festival UK 2022 collaboration project (closes 13 June).

Experimental Lab: Get Hands On With Image Capture Technology


Applications for the StoryFutures Academy Experimental Lab: Get Hands On With Image Capture are now open for creatives with an interest in this technology. The in-person workshop on Monday 5 July will take place at Royal Holloway University of London's immersive lab in Egham, providing attendees with an overview of different capture technologies and the chance to try out immersive pieces using these techniques.

Cutting-edge immersive studio, ScanLAB Projects, will share their knowledge and expertise on working with LiDAR scanning and the different applications it lends itself to - from broadcast work to immersive environments. Applications close on 16 June, midnight.

 CreaTech Leaders To Highlight Transformative Potential at CogX

The Creative Industries Council is co-curating three days of content on the CreaTech stream, with speakers from start-ups, scale-ups and brands including TikTok, Epic Games and the Serpentine Gallery. Sessions include the unveiling of new research into CreaTech’s impact on UK jobs and investment, as well as debates on uses of AI, 5G, virtual worlds and other technologies to deliver productivity gains, stunning audience experiences and new revenue streams.

Just Published: Painting Practice - Plan V For Visualisation Case Study


Bafta-winning design studio Painting Practice, with funding from Clwstwr, has developed a virtual studio app called Plan V that helps creative teams collaborate and make better, faster decisions about everything from set design to visual effects and script changes to camera angles. StoryFutures China StoryLab Challenge Winner Announced
StoryFutures has announced Arcade as the winner of The National Gallery Art & Science of Nature Challenge. In collaboration with The National Gallery and Foremost Group, Arcade will work with leading researchers in creative storytelling and a children’s immersive audience researcher from StoryFutures, to create an experience that allows children to explore the art and science of nature in the Gallery’s collection.

New Writer Focus Open For Applications


Future Screens NI partner NI Screen are seeking applications to the New Writer Focus Scheme 2021-2022. Only Northern Ireland resident writers new to feature film, long-form drama or sit-com, are eligible to apply. For the avoidance of doubt “writers new to feature film, long-form drama or sit-com” in this context means a writer without a writing credit on a produced feature film or long-form drama or sit-com. Successful applicants will access an 8 month development scheme. Closes Monday 21 June.

AHRC Film Marks Reopening Of Cultural Sector


To mark the reopening of the UK’s most-loved cultural and creative spaces on Monday 17 May, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) published a new short film showcasing some of the ways they are supporting the creative and cultural sector during and beyond the pandemic. From virtual theatre performances to motion capture bringing dancers together across long-distances, AHRC-funded research and innovation has been vital in rethinking approaches and driving recovery in the cultural sector.

Pineapple Waste Fuels Sustainable R&D Into Future Materials


Published by UKRI, as part of a Responding to Climate Change series on how companies are developing new behaviours and solutions for a sustainable future, this case study reveals how Piñatex® offers consumers a more sustainable option to leather. Founded by Dr Carmen Hijosa, a recent nominee for the European Inventor Award 2021, Piñatex® uses fibres that can be extracted from the waste leaves of pineapples, with applications from apparel to automotive design. The development of this project is supported by the Business of Fashion, Textiles & Technology SME Programme.

Creative England have relaunched four Creative Enterprise initiatives, designed for ambitious entrepreneurs working in moving image for storytelling to grow and achieve their goals.
  • Creative Enterprise: Evolve is designed to prepare high-potential screen businesses to seek investment and growth capital - Closes 07 July
  • Female Founders scale up programme offers an in-depth package of support, advice and professional coaching to female business owners, across a period of eight-months - 
    Closes 21 July. 
  • The New Ideas Fund offers grants of between 1-25k to creative practitioners and companies working in moving image. 
  • Business Planning Grants of up to £5k are available to support companies with the creation and implementation of business proposals and strategies.

Horizon Europe Funding for Cultural Heritage and Creative Industries

The upcoming funding in the new European research & innovation funding programme includes many opportunities for the UK cultural and creative industries. For 2021-22, more than 144.5m euros is available for research into cultural heritage and the cultural and creative industries, including themes such as green and digital cultural heritage, cultural and creative industries as drivers of innovation and competitiveness, traditional crafts for the future, games & society, and competitive European music ecosystem and filmmaking industry. Deadlines in autumn 2021/spring 2022.

Smartify & CCD Design Create Free Resource for the Cultural Sector

Last month Smartify published a new free resource for museums about engaging audiences on site and online, The Multi-Platform Museum: A Planning Toolkit. In the past year, audiences have developed new habits and expectations for accessing experiences remotely at home. Although many people wish to return to physical museum visits, the accessibility and convenience of engaging with culture from home will ensure multi-platform thinking continues to be central to museum planning. This free toolkit offers suggestions on how a multi-platform museum may function by taking a design-led approach: thinking through audience needs and behaviour as a starting point.

Universal Character Model Detailed in New White Paper

ETC@USC teamed with Charisma.ai, Digital Domain, Fable Studio and Write Brothers, Inc. to publish a white paper on an innovative character definition tool that enables casting audience members within a story. The goal is to help construct new immersive experiences across different narrative formats using a variety of authoring systems. The proposal features a Universal Character Model that houses all motivations, goals and methods of any specific character in order to create consistent behaviour within the fluid context of interactive and dynamic stories.

£2.5m Creative Industries Fund - Closing Soon!


Launched by Innovate UK, as part of UKRI, the £2.5m Creative Industries Fund is closing on Weds 16 June 2021. The fund offers ongoing support from Innovate UK EDGE and funding of up to £25,000 for innovation projects, aiming to provide a package of targeted support for growth so ambitious, creative businesses can reach their potential. UK registered micro and small businesses in the creative sector can apply. Research In Film Awards 2021 Open For Submissions Now!


The AHRC Research in Film Awards (RIFA) celebrates the best in academic filmmaking in the arts and humanities. Winners receive a trophy and £5,000 for a future filmmaking project.
