CMS: Hospital Participation in Perinatal Quality Collaborative/Maternal Safety Bundles

The Center for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed the Maternal Morbidity Structural Measure for including in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program beginning with a shortened calendar year 2021 reporting period and FY2023 payment determination (Federal Register, May 10, 2021). The measure would determine hospital:
  • Participation in a State or national Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative initiative and
  • Implementation of patient safety practices or bundles within that QI initiative.
Information on this proposal is available in the Federal Register and in a fact sheet.

NE Medicaid Now Covers IPP LARC

NE Medicaid now covers immediate postpartum (IPP) long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) separately from the global reimbursement. This will provide the necessary access to allow and support the provision of IPP LARCs to NE Medicaid patients. More widespread adoption of IPP LARC placement, prior to hospital discharge, has the potential to reduce unintended and short-interval pregnancy and should thus be discussed with patients in the antepartum period as an effective option for postpartum contraception. Many women are motivated to avoid short-interval pregnancy by having a LARC placed immediately postpartum, and the inability to obtain reimbursement for the procedure and the device will no longer hamper our NE Medicaid patients. See ACOG's Quick Coding Guide for more information on billing and their LARC Initiative site for additional resources.

NICU Parental Depression Screening

A recent study from Pediatrics, found that both fathers and mothers with NICU babies are at risk for depression. The study of 431 parents found 17% of fathers and 33% of mothers experienced depression. Screening both parents for depression is recommended. If you would like to participate in a collaborative improvement initiative to implement screening, contact Sydnie Carraher at scarraher@npqic.org.

Reorder: Count the Kicks Brochures

Just a reminder to check your inventory and reorder brochures for the pregnant mothers you care for. Prevent stillbirths by talking with your patients about fetal movements and counting kicks.
