Why is it important to volunteer and get involved?
Employers love a candidate with a range of soft skills and, luckily, volunteering gives you plenty of those. How?
Volunteering on committees, you’re faced with problems and have to deal with a mix of personalities – all while adjusting to life outside of your comfort zone.
This all adds up and helps to improve your teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and people skills.
Another motivator for volunteering is the insightful, real-world experiences that volunteers are exposed to in the HIM field.
It gives you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself and use your own skills and knowledge to assist in the empowerment of the members of AAHIM and AHIMA. One of the most important areas is that it allows you to develop friendships and connections with other HIM members that have the same passion to make a difference for our organization.

Dr. Houser was interviewed recently regarding this study and discussed her personal insights related to the topic. This session will walk through the key revisions to the E/M guidelines and discuss ways in which basic documentation principles will ensure that the medical record documentation paints a complete picture of the services rendered, and support the medical necessity of code selection for each level.
