Ice Cream, Accordion Music, and Kite Flying: North Dakota State Historic Sites Offer Summer Visitors a Season of Delights

Sitting Bull Exhibit Now Open at Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center

Experience the new Sitting Bull exhibition exploring the life of the legendary Hunkpapa Lakota leader (1831–1890) and his continued legacy today, produced by the State Historical Society.

Enter the State Archives Photo Contest During National Pollinators Month

Oscar Will, pictured in the photo on the left, moved to Bismarck in 1881 and started the Oscar Will Seed Co., the first nursery in North Dakota. The man seen seated in the photo on the right was a contemporary of Will, who also would have loved pollinators! Who is he, and what was their connection? Email your answer to the State Archives to be entered in a drawing for the chance to win a $10 certificate to our Museum Stores. The answer will be posted in next month’s newsletter.

Making Plans for a Family Road Trip?
Visit the New Exhibit at the Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site

 
Built in 1883, the historic Stutsman County Courthouse in Jamestown is home to a new family-friendly hands-on exhibit about how state and local governments work and what it means to be a North Dakota citizen. The site is North Dakota's oldest surviving courthouse and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Stutsman County Courthouse, 504 3rd Ave. SE, Jamestown is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Open Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and closed Monday-Tuesday.


Fort Clark State Historic Site To Be Nominated for National Historic Landmark Designation

The North Dakota State Historic Preservation Office is submitting a National Historic Landmark nomination for Fort Clark State Historic Site, the location of two 19th-century fur trading posts and a Mandan village that later became an Arikara village.

The National Historic Landmarks program is overseen by the National Park Service. It recognizes historic properties throughout the United States that possess national significance. A nationally significant property is of exceptional value in representing or illustrating an important theme in the history of the nation.

Educator Learning Opportunity Available at Summer Institute
 
Join educators from around the state for the 2021 Summer Teacher Institute July 26-29, 2021. Learn about the new North Dakota Studies high school curriculum and the Inquiry Design Model approach. Join online or in person at the Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. 

Participation is open to educators of all grade levels. Two credits available. Registration is free through June 30 and increases to $45 July 1. Travel reimbursement is available for eligible participants. Capacity is limited—register here. 2022 National History Day Theme Announced 

Get a jump start on a popular competition! The 2022 National History Day theme is Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences. The free contest is open to middle and high school students and will be Friday, April 29, 2022, at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.
