Welcome to the Oregon Region's
June 2021 Newsletter!

Hello Oregon Region!

This past weekend was our Annual (and only) fundraiser, the Inavale One-Days. As most of you know, the Oregon Region Pony Club provides (and I organize/coordinate) ALL of the volunteers to run all three phases of the event for both days. We also set up the arenas before and clean them up after the event. This requires a LOT of volunteers and many hours of dedication. I have to admit, this year was the most difficult year I have had in the 5 or so years I have been coordinating the volunteers for the region. Even on Saturday morning, as the event was about to begin, I did not have enough volunteers to fill all of the jobs that needed to be done. Luckily, some of you stepped up at the last minute. It was a bit of a scramble at first, but we made it happen! I want to thank each and every one of my fabulous volunteers, some of whom volunteered all day, some all day both days, and a few who endured me moving them from job to job never complaining and happily doing whatever I needed at the moment. I TRULY APPRECIATE YOU ALL!  It ended up being a great weekend and I think everyone was happy to be back at it. It was so fun to see all of my Pony Club friends again (and hug them! yay for vaccines!) and it was wonderful to meet some of our newer members and parents too. Thank you again to those of you who helped out and for those of you who didn't, you really missed out on a great time, so please make a mental note to pitch in next year.

Check the "Region Finances" section of the newsletter for a survey to cast your vote as to how the Region should spend the money we earned!

Does Your Club Want to Host a Summer Camp?

The cost would be $200 a day which includes the cost of 1 porta potty and around 15 horses for a weekend. Bigger groups would be fine but would need to rent another porta potty. Naomi will have cross county jumps and stalls prepared but the camp organizers will have to be responsible for stadium jumps and dressage arena etc.

If your club is interested in hosting a summer camp at Meadows Vineyard, please contact Naomi Meadows at  naomimeadows@hotmail.com

ODS Youth Education Series
June 27th
Marianna Stables in West Linn, OR

The Youth Education Series of clinics will be open to any Junior rider whether they belong to ODS, 4-H, Pony Club, OSET or just riding in lessons on their own. There will be at least four clinics this year in the different regions of ODS. In the future these clinics will be moved around Oregon to try to hit all areas.

These clinics will be taught by ODS Instructors who are at the FEI level, each of these clinics will follow the same format so that the program is similar in all of the clinics. Instructors will come from a different region of ODS to avoid any professional conflicts.

In order to keep these clinics affordable for all youth, the instructors will be volunteering their time and the arenas will also be donated. There will be a nominal fee of $25 per rider to offset the other expenses.

The application is on the Oregon Dressage Website.

Region Finances

~ Michele Stevens, Treasurer ~

Your regional board would like to know how our members and parents would like to see the Region fundraising dollars used for the benefit of our Region. The money raised varies each year, but any amount belongs to the whole region, and it is appropriate that you all have a voice in deciding when and how the money is spent! Your response is encouraged - we could not fundraise without you, and we'd like to hear what activities/purchases, etc. are important to you!

Please fill out the fundraising survey at:

We are now able to use Zelle Transfers to pay/receive funds in clubs and the Region. These transfers are bank to bank, with no "middleman" or apps required. The transfers work with an email or a cell phone number, and best of all, there are no fees!

OR Region Youth Board

Mikayla Stout (Co-President)
Ailis Ferry (Co-President)
Tess Hegarty (Activities Coordinator)
Tayte Nelson (Secretary, Social Media Organizer)
Lauren Tittel (Treasurer)

Happy May everyone! It was so nice to see a lot of you at the Inavale One-Days this weekend, and now we are gearing up for our next competition! The Oregon Region Youth Board is excited to announce that Model Horse Rally 2021 is in the works, so be on the lookout for emails about a June 26th event at Michelle Steven’s farm in West Linn, Oregon. Model Horse Rally is a great way for younger members to learn about how rallies work and practice some skills in a one day event without needing a horse. We are looking to have a fun day filled with Pony Club activities and socialization! We will be sending out more information on registration and participation soon.

In other news, Co-President Ailis Ferry has teamed up with Jodelle Marx to start a region-wide virtual yoga series! Keep an eye out for more information as we will be starting classes heading into the summer as a fun way to combine physical fitness with skills we use as equestrians!

As you may have heard we are currently working on a clothing drive for our closet project, and are compiling donations. We’re looking for gently used riding attire and tack. Please email us at youthboard.or@gmail.com if you’d like to set up a collection time to donate items, or if you have any questions! We hope to get the PC closet fully in action before the summer - but we need your responses to know what clothing items you and your club are looking for! Please search your email for a form and complete it so that we can start collecting clothing donations.

It is our goal to have at least one member of each club represented on the Youth Board by the beginning of the Summer. DCs and CAs, please discuss having representatives of your club on the YB at your next meeting!

If you or members of your club/center are interested in learning more about the YB, please reach out to us at our email (youthboard.or@gmail.com) or look at our website (Oregon Region Youth Board). Our next monthly meeting will be Wednesday 6/8, and we invite club reps or interested members to join us at 8:30 pm on zoom! Email me if you would like to join.

Follow us on Instagram at orpc_youthboard for updates on pony club activities!

Thank you for supporting the ORYB. Stay healthy and enjoy June!

CLUB NEWS

Highland Riders PC: This month HRPC enjoyed a fun lesson on bandaging with Tayte Nelson from Oregon Trail PC (Thanks Tayte!!) as well as some practice in cross country. We also had a great workshop with Eagala Equine Therapy to help our club build skills in communication and teamwork. The girls had to work together as a team to guide a horse through an obstacle course without touching the horse. It was a challenge! Later this month we are looking forward to a certification prep with Anna Young in preparation for a certification day at the end of the month.

We are always looking for guest instructors. If any upper level members need practice in teaching, send them our way!

Oregon Trail PC:  With summer approaching, and the prospect of certifications in the air, Oregon Trail enjoyed a fantastic demonstration of the correct "Pony Club" way to lunge.   Tayte did an excellent job of teaching our club the proper equipment to use, the correct way to fit and use the bridle and attached lunge line, the difference between pivot and parallel lunging, body position and use of lunge whip.
The rather "round" pony was stubborn enough for Tayte to have to really use her lunging skills, but obedient enough to comply with some gentle encouragement :)
Oregon Trail welcomes new member Barb!  We look forward to getting to know Barb and her many horses and foals at her barn in West Linn :)

Rose City PC:  Rose City Pony Club loves Inavale! All but two Rose City Pony Club members participated in the Inavale One Days fundraiser in a few different ways. Kyra and Aili Varner were Ring Steward, and score runner, respectively, while their mom Amber volunteered as Dressage scribe. Our DC Nancy Spitzer also volunteered as a Dressage scribe. Ava Hacke and her grandmother Wendy volunteered all day both days as score runner and both Stadium jumping and Dressage warm up steward. They even brought a friend who also volunteered the whole time and that friend is now probably going to join Pony Club! Our very own Tracy Stout worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the event and was on-site Friday through Sunday evening coordinating and organizing all of the volunteers for the weekend (as well as helping at the registration tent). Thank you Tracy, Kyra, Aili, Amber, Nancy, Ava, Wendy and friend! And finally, Mikayla Stout was busy riding beautifully in the event both days, placing 3rd one day and 1st the other day in the Beginner Novice division. Congratulations, Mikayla! Mikayla is also busy with the Regional Youth Board planning the Model Horse Rally later this month, June 26th. (see her submission under Youth Board below).

This month we also congratulate our senior members, Abby Frank and Mikayla Stout as they graduate from Southridge High School and Catlin Gabel School, respectively. Congratulations  Abby and Mikayla! We wish you all the best in your adventures next year!

Abby and Mikayla back then....

Abby and Mikayla now!

She started with Eventing in middle school and continued through High School. During College she rode on her college's IHSA team making it to Zone's in her senior year. After college, she bought her very first horse herself (Bren) and continued in eventing and eventually landing a teaching and managing job at a barn. She started a Pony Club Riding Center as a way to bring the Horsemanship and Management side of horses to her students who did not own horses. It has turned into one of the best decisions for her program. She is looking forward to helping all Centers and Clubs bring the best HM possible to their members.

Treasurer ~ Michele Stevens
Michele has served on the Regional Board since 2018. She is also currently the DC of Oregon Trail Pony Club. Her daughter, Emma, started in Pony Club at the end of 2005 with Oregon Trail, and did certifications every year, achieving her A Rating when she was 17.  Since then, Emma has continued to help out Pony Clubs in the US and the UK, by teaching and as an examiner.  Michele joined as an official Pony Club member, shortly after Emma went to university, and has evented to the Beginner Novice level, and achieved her D2 eventing certification.

Regional Instructional Coordinator ~ Jordan Schulz
Jordan is a B level member of Patton Valley Pony Club. Jordan has been a member of Pony Club for about 15 years now, and has traveled to Cle Elum and Kentucky for championships, once in eventing and once in show jumping. Throughout her equestrian career she has worked for Grand Prix rider and trainer Terri Rocovich, as well as 4 star riders Ryan Wood and Courtney Cooper. Jordan is currently working towards her HA and A level certifications and is an assistant trainer at Inavale Farms in Corvallis. Jordan looks forward to "seeing" everyone this year and can't wait for the accomplishments 2021 will bring!

Secretary ~ Anna Hohl
Anna joined the Regional Board in 2020 and has been involved with Pony Club since 2018. She is also the DC of Highland Riders Pony Club. Her daughter, Madeline, is a D3 EV with Highland Riders. Anna has fond memories of growing up riding horses, but now lives vicariously through her two horse-crazy daughters.
