IN_BO CALL FOR PAPERS on "SACRED PEDAGOGY. The sacred in architectural and design education"
For all the friends and followers of ACS FORUM an absolute preview:  in the coming weeks the International Scientific  Journal IN_BOhttps://issuu.com/in_bo will publish a call for papers for a special issue entirely dedicated to the role and usefulness of the sacred in architectural education. The question is whether (and under which conditions) such pedagogies can still be effective tools to test design abilities on the one hand, and the expressiveness of forms and materials on the other. A call to verify whether (and which) sacredness may still feed this creative tension, considering the extensions of our socio-cultural horizon, the processes of secularization (and post-secularization), and the changes in aesthetic production. This call tries to resolve a contemporary paradox: if architecture and its teaching cannot in any way avoid the sacred, where do they deal with it in architectural school and curricula?
Updates will appear soon at https://in-bo.unibo.it/  ... Check for updates

Suchi Reddy will unveil a new, site-specific artificial intelligence (AI) and light sculpture in November 2021 as the centerpiece of “FUTURES,” the Smithsonian’s first major building-wide exploration of the future. Titled me + you, Reddy’s two-story installation weaves human wisdom and intelligent technology together, forming a shimmering monument reflective of visitors’ collective future visions. The work marks Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) first major contemporary art commission, and its blurring of responsive light, color, and AI, coalescing in a human-centric form, is groundbreaking in a public artwork. David Pereyra announces the publication of his book Proclaiming Holy Scriptures, a study of Place and Ritual, in the Abrahamic Religions. This work provides a comprehensive study on Holy Scriptures’ proclamation as an enacted celebration and its function as a performance within sacralized theatrical spaces.  Contributing to an underexplored scholarship area, the book shows how Scripture is integral to religious life within Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and how these traditions have venerated the reading of texts from an appointed place as a sacred act. The Link Between Archaeology and Architecture
https://www.archdaily.com/960912/the-link-between-archaeology-and-architecture
At the heart of it, architecture is an inter-disciplinary profession. Ranging from structural engineers to quantity surveyors, a design project thrives from the collaboration of individuals from various fields of work. An often-overlooked connection is the link between the fields of architecture and archeology, which in more ways than one have a lot in common. In a time of increased awareness on issues of sustainability and heritage, the expertise present in the field of archaeology plays a vital part in the preservation of architectural landmarks of historical significance.

The main challenge in the project was to give the local community a meaningful church back. As a paradox, the tragic loss of the old church gave birth to a new beginning. The theme of the new church thereby became resurrection. Together with the artist, Espen Dietrichson, the architects worked with different design elements to manifest the theme through the project.

Will Robots Ever Replace Architects? Why Designs of the Future Won't Ever be Fully Automated
https://www.archdaily.com/962591/will-robots-ever-replace-architects-why-designs-of-the-future-wont-ever-be-fully-automated
Architecture and automation are two concepts that in the modern era of design and technological advancements go hand in hand- or do they? On one end, there’s a slight fear that “robots will replace designers”, making the profession more automated, and less creative. On the other, technology has made the practice of architecture more efficient in terms of process and cost. How far will technology take us, and will your job ever be lost to technology? The short answer is, probably not.

Four Lost Cities. A Secret History of the Urban Age
 By Annalee Newitz
https://wwnorton.com/books/9780393652666
In Four Lost Cities, acclaimed science journalist Annalee Newitz takes readers on an entertaining and mind-bending adventure into the deep history of urban life. Investigating across the centuries and around the world, Newitz explores the rise and fall of four ancient cities, each the center of a sophisticated civilization: the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in Central Turkey, the Roman vacation town of Pompeii on Italy’s southern coast, the medieval megacity of Angkor in Cambodia, and the indigenous metropolis Cahokia, which stood beside the Mississippi River where East St. Louis is today. Four Lost Cities is a journey into the forgotten past, but, foreseeing a future in which the majority of people on Earth will be living in cities, it may also reveal something of our own fate.

A FOCUS ON PEDAGOGY: TEACHING, LEARNING AND RESEARCH IN THE MODERN ACADEMY
Dates: 20-22 April, 2022 --- Place: Virtual
Abstracts deadline: 30th June [early submissions]
Organized by University of Kassel, Ball State University, Beaconhouse National University and the University of Pretoria. Coordinated by AMPS
Set in the context of the pandemic, environmental challenges, new media paradigms and beyond, this conference reminds us that there are a number of critical issues at play for educators and researchers today. Asking us to take a step back from the flux we have been in recently, it invites us to discuss both the radical realignments that have been necessary in recent times, and those aspects of our pedagogy that have continued unaffected by remote teaching. Bringing both sides of this coin together, the intention is to better grasp the tenor of teaching and research in today’s changing, and increasingly hybrid, academy.

November 11-13, 2021
The purpose of the 2021 AHRA conference will be to question what the ‘region’ and ‘regional’ mean for architectural cultures past and present and to speculate on what different forms and formulations they might take in the future. Among other sub-themes and topics, we aim to explore the region as a real geographical site of evolving socio-economic activity, as a mythical locus of enduring value, as a gatekeeper of indigenous crafts and vernacular techniques, as a site of architectural and artistic imagination, as a repository of contested and mobile identities, and more.

On January 1st, 2020, the world woke to the news that a pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, China, had been identified as a strain of coronavirus. By March, the World Health Organization would define it as a pandemic and the most serious global health threat on the planet. Under lockdown conditions the relationship between health and the spaces we inhabit became central.
While it is tempting to see this recent global concern about health and environments as new, the reality is, it has a long history. The public health profession was born from the housing conditions of the 19th-century urban poor. Demands for walkable neighborhoods are long-standing. Accessible design, and the broader healthy cities agenda globally, all pre-date COVID-19. Seen in this light, this conference seeks to bring recent experiences and responses into dialogue with these long-standing areas of research into health, wellbeing, and environments.

Cultures, Communities, and Design - A conference connecting planning, landscapes, architecture, and people

The University of Calgary, CANADA
June 28-30, 2022
Abstracts: 01 July, 2021 (Early)

'The Countryside' - a polemically generic term Rem Koolhaas has recently used to reposition debates about our cities to those of rural areas. While posited as 'new', it is, in reality, a well established mode of thinking. Through notions such as the peri-urban for example, geographers, sociologists, architects, urban designers and regional economists have all debated the urban-rural relationship for several decades. Under this framework we are obliged to consider the city and its architecture on its own terms, but also address the 'rural' in its particular context and, importantly, explore the parallels and mutual influences at play. According to this logic, the social, cultural, planning and design issues relevant in our cities find parallels outside the city fringe. Calgary, the host city of this conference, is a perfect example. It has heavy industry, a thriving business economy and a growing tourist sector. However, pockets of the city contend with poverty and gentrification. As a city, Calgary also 'pressures' its surrounding lands including the Rockies and the Banff nature reserve.

The Sixteenth International Conference on Design Principles and Practices
Conference organized by the Design Principles and Practices Research Network and the University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia.
Dates: 19-21 January 2022
Place: Online + University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia
Format: A mix of live, pre-recorded, and in-person (at a scale that's allowed) presentations and social interaction spaces.

Founded in 2007, the Design Principles and Practices Research Network offers an interdisciplinary forum to explore the meaning and purpose of design. In professional and disciplinary terms, the network traverses a broad sweep to construct a trans-disciplinary dialogue, which encompasses a wide array of design paradigms and practices. We move between theoretical reflection on the nature of design and case studies of design practice, and from research-based perspectives to the experience-based perspectives of design insiders. Our aim is to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions. Papers following these themes and special focus are requested:
Special Focus - Back to Life: Seeking Vision and Purpose in Principles and Practice
  • Theme One – Design Education
  • Theme Two – Design in Society
  • Theme Three – Designed Objects
  • Theme Four – Visual Design
  • Theme Five – Design Management and Professional Practice
