Week 7 - Where is the term going?

I seem to start each newsletter with - we have had a busy two weeks - and this is true again and now we are also starting to look ahead towards the end of the term and a number of events to celebrate our learning.

We celebrated our annual 'Tree for Every Child' planting day on Thursday June 3, 2021. It seems that every planting day is foggy and cold - well as many as I can remember in my short time at Wairakei Primary School anyway.

It certainly didn’t deter our Enviro students and Kids Greening Taupo Rangers from getting stuck in and helping our new students plant their trees around the school.

We also celebrated this with a ‘wear green’ day. Our themed mufti days are always very popular and this was no exception.

A highlight for me was being shown the lunchbox of one of our new entrant students, Zoey - her lunch was all green. That was true dedication from home.

We raised $338 towards Kids Greening Taupo to help them to continue the great work they do around our local environment.

The PTA are all go this week preparing for the school discos. Te Mihi and Aratiatia will be dancing the afternoon away on Wednesday, Ohaaki on Thursday and Poihipi and Te Huka on Friday. These will be held in the school hall from 1.45p.m. to 3p.m. The theme is 'Sports'. Entry is a gold coin and there will be a selection of disco toys and lollies for sale for $1 and sausages for $2. We will be introducing disco tokens for these days to help students manage their money and hopefully avoid losing any money. The teachers will collect the money at the start of the day and allocate named tokens. If you are able to help out on any of these days don’t hesitate to get in touch with the PTA at pta@wairakeitaupo.school.nz.

Keep an eye out next week for an order form for the upcoming PTA Butter Chicken Lunch on Thursday July 1, 2021. Cost is $10 for each meal. Payment with your order needs to be at school by Thursday, June 24, 2021. Your order can be paid by Eftpos or correct cash.

The end of term is fast approaching and the last week of term is looking to be a busy one. We will be celebrating Matariki throughout the week. Our 'Celebration of Learning' will be an Oral Language Festival on Thursday July 8, 2021.  A selection of students across the school will be speaking around the topic - 'Our People'. Make sure you check the Community Calendar and put these key dates in your diary. There will be more details about these in the next newsletter.

We were lucky enough to have the dental van at Wairakei Primary School towards the end of 2020 and again in Term 1 this year. The dental services want us to remind parents and caregivers that students at any school can access care for the relief of tooth and gum pain by contacting the Taupo Hospital Clinic on 07 3789470 or 0800525378. They would also like to remind parents and caregivers that brushing twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, avoiding sugary drinks & sticky sugary snacks are the most effective ways to keep teeth healthy in between dental visits.

Is your child in Year 5 or Year 6?
ICAS exams are run by the University of New South Wales. They recognise academic excellence and assess the student's ability to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. These are offered to our Year 5 and Year 6 students who wish to sit them.
Please complete the following form if you wish your child to complete the ICAS 2021 Exams.
https://forms.gle/3WuDC8AJyUns98wH6. The exams cost $20 each to sit. This would need to be paid into the school bank account by July 9, 2021.

Our teachers and students have been busy in their classrooms. Have a look at these blog posts to appreciate the wide variety of learning that is happening at school.

Compliment Clouds
“A kind word is free, easy to give and everybody has something to offer.”

“Research shows that kindness and giving evokes gratitude, makes us happier, strengthens our connections with others and is contagious!” https://sparklers.org.nz/

Kind and sporty Avery shares her cloud with all the amazing things others said about her.

Jack with a lovely smile compliment cloud is ready to go.

Room 3 practised giving each other compliments and then made compliment clouds to share the nice things others had said about them.

Learning to build positive relationships with others is an important social skill that comes under the key competency of relating to others and the Health and Physical Education Curriculum achievement objective of building positive relationships.

Learning to say nice things to each other helps students build positive relationships by filling each other's buckets and contributes to a positive classroom environment. Individuals' self-esteem can also be raised when others point out their positive attributes.

After a circle time session around compliments, students were given the challenge to write as many positive comments about each other as they could. It was amazing to see how many positive comments were written and that no one got left out.

Next, students followed instructions to make a kindness cloud. Finally, students choose their five favourite compliments that they received. Students copied their favourite compliments on the coloured paper strips to hang down from their cloud in a rainbow.

Students carefully copied their compliments from their books to the coloured strips.

Henry who is great at being Henry is hard at work making his cloud.

Willow who is an amazing artist cutting out her cloud.

The kindness clouds are displayed in the classroom to remind students to say nice things and be kind. They are also a nice reminder when someone is having a bad day to look at all the cool things others think about them.

Hiding behind that cloud is a good friend called Aiden.

 Student Voice

"My classmates said I was cool and happy. This made me feel good, like a good day." Donte

"Jake said that I was small but smart and good at drawing." Ryker

"I liked when people said I was smart." Grayson

"Some people wrote smart on my cloud but they didn’t spell it right so I fixed it." Reid

"My favourite compliment was that I am friendly." Zoey

"My friends said BFF -  best friends forever on my cloud." Vaanya

"Kindness is free so you can give lots of it away." Aiden
