Online Tai Chi Lessons: Monthly Bulletin #45 (June 2021)
Online Lessons vs Virtual Lessons
Hello <<First Name>>,

Welcome to this month’s bulletin for Online Tai Chi Lessons!

25 years ago, a student asked me if he could film with his video camera, I said no to him knowing that the outcome would not be right. That started me thinking about finding the right ways to produce tai chi instructional videos. Just like telling a great story is different from making a movie of it. It could take years and huge cost to tell the story right in a movie. A movie can be powerfully moving.

A good instructional video can be in many ways amazingly effective teaching. It would require an experienced instructor with a good teaching method, an understanding of how viewers learn best, clear and concise instructions, and an anticipation of possible questions from viewers of different levels and interests of tai chi. Much more than these, the instructor needs to know so many things about video, and be able to see himself on the other side of the camera… I learned so much over the years.

Then came the lockdown. Virtual teaching replaced in-person teaching. There are many similarities between virtual teaching and online lessons. More people learn about what they look like on the other side of the camera, the angles, the views (you don’t realize viewers can only see half of you), the lighting, the posture and the movements. For example, when you use Zoom to conduct or to learn in a virtual workshop, you can see yourself on screen and then in recordings. These experiences are extremely useful for learning and teaching tai chi. Like a digital camera, we get instant feedback on how good or bad a photo is. This improves our techniques of taking photos. Similarly, virtual lessons come with instant feedback. It is like taking a video of yourself and checking your tai chi forms. It is better than a mirror. Seeing ourselves and our movements really helps us to improve external expression of tai chi. Key principles like movement control, posture and weight transfer are clearly visible. It is amazingly useful for improving many aspects of tai chi especially body mind integration. If I thought I was upright but alas I was not, the video shows me!

The years of learning at producing instructional videos help me greatly to conduct virtual workshops more effectively. You too can use your mobile phone or video camera to film yourself or watch the recording of Zoom to improve your tai chi.

FEATURED REVIEW
Online Lessons: Tai Chi for Beginners
Rated 5 out of 5 stars
Reviewed by: Lee Nolan

"I'm excited to begin the course with Dr. Lam. The first lesson shows me how much I need to improve my balance but I could literally begin to feel my weight and balance for part of the time. I have confidence that working on this over time will improve my balance. I love the entire concept and the slow deliberate movements combining mind and body. Excellent!"
