You Matter Communities Fund Third Round

The winners for the second round of the You Matter Communities Community Fund have been announced.

The lead contractor for Birmingham City Council at the Alexander Stadium Redevelopment, has finalised 14 community projects that will each receive a grant of up to £1,000 to support their work within local communities.

Launched last year, the You Matter Communities initiative provides support to local communities through volunteer time, small grants, and the use of excess materials from the construction process.
The initiative is focused on supporting community organisations, in particular those facing disproportionate challenges, to recover from the impact of COVID-19.

The latest round of successful applicants takes the overall number of organisations to benefit through the Community Fund to 32, with almost £28,000 awarded. Click here to read more.

Applications for the third round of the You Matter Community Fund, will be welcome from July 2021. For more details of the scheme please visit the Birmingham City Council website by clicking here.

Community groups and organisations are encouraged to apply for the grants of up to £10,000 to develop and deliver low carbon projects in Birmingham.

If anyone in the network has any questions or are not sure if their organisation or project idea meets the criteria, please get them to contact us ASAP to discuss, as we’re keen to make the process as smooth as possible.

Nature & Biodiversity Play a Vital Role in Protecting Our Health

Urbanisation, land use, global trade and industrialisation have led to profound and negative impacts on nature, biodiversity and ecosystems across the world. WHO Europe has published its first report on nature, biodiversity and health together with the WHO Collaborating Centre on Natural Environments and Health at the University of Exeter.

In providing an overview of the impacts of the natural environment on human health, the report covers such diverse topics as the health relevance of freshwater systems; air quality; coasts, seas and oceans; soil, agriculture, nutrition and food security, infectious diseases emerging from human-wildlife interaction, microbial diversity, medicine and health care and green and blue spaces. It presents the ways nature and ecosystems can support and protect health and well-being and describes how nature degradation and loss of biodiversity can threaten human health.

These findings can be summarised in three key messages.

  1. Nature provides the basic conditions for human health.
  2. The environment protects human health.
  3. Pressure on natural environments threatens human health.

Green Space Not Equally Accessable To All

Across Britain, 2.78 million people live further than a ten-minute walk from their nearest park or green space. That's the finding of the latest Green Space Index which reveals that, despite their vital role in the nation's wellbeing during lockdown, our much loved local parks are not equally accessible to all.

The Green Space Index was launched by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at an event at Starbank Park in Edinburgh. The event was one of a number of projects with a positive effect on climate change that The Duke and Duchess have visited across Scotland. Urban parks and green spaces boost air quality, support habitats and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Green Space Index is Fields in Trust's annual barometer of publicly accessible local park and green space provision. First launched in 2019, this third release once again highlights the inequities in provision across Britain. Despite their value for health, wellbeing, community and environment, some parts of Britain have access to half the green space as others - Scots enjoy 38.18 sqm of provision per person whilst for residents in London the figure falls to just 19.53 sqm.
