June 2021
Join us this Saturday! New Volunteers Welcome!
Low tides, free parking, guided naturalist beach walks, and free hats and popsicles are just a few of the exciting things happening at Birch Bay State Park for the “Watershed Watchers: Day at the Beach” event from noon to 3pm this Saturday, June 12! Join Birch Bay Watershed & Aquatic Resources Management District (BBWARM)  to celebrate and appreciate current and new volunteers in the Birch Bay Watershed Watchers program, while enjoying a summer day at the beach.
Hiller Family Watershed Watcher Volunteer Spotlight
Dave is a self-proclaimed “litter despiser” and Deb is a “beach baby.” Together they are making Whatcom County a better place to live by volunteering for the Watershed Watcher program. The Hillers have been married for 15 years and have spent the last 10 years in Birch Bay. They have even been training their grandson to be a steward of the watershed! Click here to read their full story.
New Signs Around Birch Bay

You might have noticed a few new signs around Birch Bay this month. BBWARM worked with the Whatcom County Health Department to have a "No Dumping" sign installed on Birch Point Road after multiple reports of hazardous litter were reported in the area by one of our volunteer Watershed Watchers.

Three new mutt mitt stations (pet waste dispensers) were purchased by BBWARM and installed on Birch Bay Drive and in the Salish Breeze development.
Neighborhood Drainage Improvements
In early June, an insert-a-tee was installed on Henley Street to connect a private property owner’s downspouts into the county’s stormwater conveyance system to improve drainage. The project was funded by BBWARM.
Thank You "Find Fido Scavenger Hunt" Participants!

Thanks to all of the Whatcom County Scooping Stars that participated in our Find Fido Scavenger Hunt last month! Forty-eight teams accepted the challenge and used ten clues to locate posters hidden in parks all around Whatcom County. One dedicated team, Team Huffelshuff, found all ten posters! We randomly selected three of the qualified teams to win a scooping prize pack. Congrats to Team Huffelshuff, Team Hoax, and Scott Hutchinson! Winners will be contacted by email.

How is the Water Quality in Birch Bay?
In May, 5 of the 11 sites sampled in Birch Bay exceeded the water quality health standards for fecal coliform bacteria.  Click here to view the latest water quality results for Birch Bay/Terrell Creek or visit the Whatcom County Public Works' Routine Water Quality Monitoring Results page for links to online maps and status reports for focus areas throughout Whatcom County.
BBWARM Advisory Committee Meeting

The next meeting of the BBWARM Advisory Committee will be held via Zoom on June 16th from 6-8pm.
