SHAD ROW!  Wait ... What???

Celebrate "Dead Shad Season" as Holyoke Rows presents the first ever SHAD ROW, Saturday, June 19, racing from 8:00 a.m., with picnicking on the lawn to follow.

This is our first run at putting on a Spring Sprint race. (To get an idea about Sprint Racing, check out usrowing.org) We've invited rowers from a few other clubs and there will be Youth and Masters racing 1000m upstream in four or five lanes.

There are plenty of ways to help out before Saturday: prepping for the picnic; helping to set the course, and jobs on race day as well. I can send out details to folks who have helped before, but all the logistics are simpler, timing is easier, and the whole event is within view.

We hope that the post-race picnic/potluck will be as much a part of the event as the racing. Please email me at hooksdavis@gmail.com, if you'd like to volunteer and help with the race or if you have time during the week before.

Be sure to talk with Stephanie about racing, and please plan on joining us on June 19.

SHAD COUNTING CONTEST
Great Connecticut River Migratory Shad Count
Every spring, fish migrate up the Connecticut River and tributaries. Each year, hundreds of thousands of American shad make this journey. How many shad do you think are in the river this spring? Participate in CRC's very FIRST Great Connecticut River Migratory Shad Count contest for your chance to win great prizes from Captain Morgan’s Boat Training & Charters and Sam’s Outdoor Outfitters.

YOUR CHALLENGE

How many shad do you think will pass the Holyoke Dam in MA this season? Submit your guess for the season grand total by 11:59pm on June 15, 2021 for a chance to win! Late entries will not be considered.

Your guess could win you one of these prizes to help you enjoy rivers even more this year. From boating to biking, fishing to hiking, and more…summer is a great time to enjoy rivers!

Curious how many shad have already passed the Holyoke Dam this year? See weekly counts and season totals on the Holyoke Fishway website.

THE PRIZES

THE WINNERS

The fish migration season will wrap up and winners will be announced by June 30, 2021. The winner will be the person whose guess is closest to the actual grand total number of shad passed this season. They will be contacted at the email address submitted below so make sure it’s correct!

CRC staff, trustees, and their families are not eligible to win.
And now for something completely different ...

..........  RIVER WORD of-the-month  ..........
(Some word fun for you) From Andy Fisk, Executive Director, of the Connecticut River Conservancy, and a Holyoke Rows rower too, comes the river word- of-the-month.
flu·vi·al /ˈflo͞ovēəl/
adjective   of or found in a river.
In geography and geologyfluvial processes are associated with rivers and streams and the deposits and landforms created by them. When the stream or rivers are associated with glaciersice sheets, or ice caps, the term  glaciofluvial or fluvioglacial is used.

Thanks, Andy!
Lastly, as Stephanie says, "ROW BETTER!"
