Ransomware, malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid, is again making international news. A school district, an oil company—which led to a $5 million payout and chaos in the US fuel supply—and Ireland’s national health service were all victims in May. Even if money isn’t lost in the form of ransom, losses certainly include time spent dealing with the situation, business productivity, and probably lots of sleep. In Ireland, one of the smaller problems was that hospitals had to use paper admission forms, among other things now done almost exclusively by computer, which alone is a time-consuming inconvenience.
