AtlantECO has now entered the second half of its first Period, time to take a look at what has been achieved in the first 9 months and prepare for the amendment of the Grant Agreement, plan for our second annual meeting and get ready for the start of Mission Microbiomes on board of Tara from the end of July. Many events have taken place lately our programme of webinars is developing nicely. Read all about it below!

AtlantECO endorsed as part of Ocean Decade Programme

Announcement

In the context of global celebrations for World Oceans Day, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission announced the first Actions officially endorsed as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, 2021-2030 (the ‘Ocean Decade’). AtlantECO is endorsed as part of the Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON) programme.

AtlantECO flagships: port calls schedule

Dates and venues published

The teams involved in planning for the sampling expeditions in AtlantECO have been busy developing a programme for the port calls of Tara and Veleiro ECO boats over the next 12 months. More details will be published for each as soon as we have them, but you can check out the current schedule on our website.

Microbiome Support project

#MicrobiomeAmbassadors are project partners, advisory group or expert pool members, members of related projects or other microbiome enthusiasts who are interested in the role of the microbiome in the food system and its impact on planetary and human health and who declare their love for all things microbe publicly.

Ocean Hackaton

Call for challenges

Ocean Hackathon® is a 48 hours non-stop event to develop a prototype in a team and to think about its use, using various digital data related to the sea. A call for challenges has been launched to identify projects on which the teams will position themselves in each of the participating cities. At the end of the weekend, one team will be elected to take part in the international pitching competition at the end of 2021 in Brest.

European conference of AMU: Protect our oceans, the challenge of Europe's Global Leadership.

16th June 2021 | Online

Aix-Marseille University is organising a European conference on the interplay between ocean science, policy and society. Two sessions are planned for "Tackling marine ecosystem disturbance caused by climate-change" and " The challenge of contaminant dispersal". See the programme here.

World Microbe Forum

20-24th June 2021 | Online

Uniting the microbial sciences community worldwide to share cutting-edge science: the World Microbiome Forum will bring active researchers, industry professionals, undergraduate, postgraduate students, educators, and leaders to showcase how microbial sciences are essential to the health and wellbeing of humankind. In addition, satellite events and sessions will extend the conversation to policy makers and members of the public.

International Statistical Ecology Conference

27 June- 1st July 2022 | Cape Town, SA

The International Statistical Ecology Conference (ISEC) will take place in Cape Town , South Africa, from 27 June to 1 July 2022, hosted by the centre for Statistics in Ecology, Environment and Conservation (SEEC) at the University of Cape Town. The conference will be in hybrid format with an in-person meeting in Cape Town and an option to participate remotely. Registration will open later but you can sign up to the mailing list.

Tips & reminders

Interim report and GA Amendment

Deadline: 5th July 2021

We have now completed the first 9 months of the AtlantECo project, this marks the half way point of the first period. All partners have been asked to complete an interim report in order to: 

  • Provide an update on all activities to date (September 2020 to 31st May 2021)
  • Identify and mitigate risks
  • Prepare the content for the Grant Agreement Amendment (technical and financial aspects)
