Dear Friends,

The UK is hosting two major international talks this year. The G7 Summit, which begins in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, tomorrow and UN climate talks – COP26 – in Glasgow in November. As you may have noticed, we have been placing a lot of emphasis on these talks in our work. Each offers a key moment for UK climate campaigners to send a message to world leaders. To support action during the G7 Summit, we have decided to put out a special edition of our newsletter - welcome to our first special edition!

So what does ‘G7’ stand for? The term refers to an intergovernmental organisation consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Together, this group of countries represents over half of the world economy. This means agreements made at the G7 Summit will be critical in determining whether we adequately address the climate crisis, Covid-19 pandemic and the global inequalities the crisis and the pandemic have been exacerbating.

This special edition includes information about actions that Friends in Cornwall and Devon are organising over the coming days, a powerful letter that we and dozens of other faith leaders have written to the Prime Minister and details about events that our interfaith partners and the COP26 Coalition will be running today Thursday 10 June 2021. Wherever you are, we hope you’ll join us as we call for world leaders to use the G7 Summit to make real progress towards climate justice!

In Friendship,

Rebecca

Join Cornwall Friends as they hold world leaders in the light

Quakers in Cornwall are planning three outdoor meetings for worship on 11, 12 and 13 June in Falmouth from 12–1pm each day. All welcome. You can find out more details in the Quakers G7 in Cornwall Facebook group, including details of where to meet and who to contact if you want to join.

For those who want to join but can’t make it to Carbis Bay, you can attend an online meeting for worship being hosted by Devon Friends on Saturday to uphold Cornish Friends. The Zoom room will open on Saturday 12 June at 11:45am. Click this link to join. Meeting ID: 890 5573 3851 Passcode: CarbisBay.

Alternatively, you might like to sit at the same time as any of the outdoor meetings for worship to uphold Friends in Cornwall, and hold the G7 leaders in the Light as we hope for a good outcome from the summit.

Share our letter from faith leaders to the Prime Minister

Along with dozens of other faith leaders, Quakers in Britain have written to the Prime Minister to ask him to use the UK’s Presidency of the G7 Summit to drive real progress. “As people of faith, we cannot stand by while world leaders continue to delay action. These delays, on phasing out support for fossil fuels and on addressing climate impacts, are destroying lives. From the Pacific islands to sub-Saharan Africa, from Bangladesh to Brazil, the climate crisis is a present reality for the world’s poorest people. They have little power to tackle this catastrophe which they did not cause. We ask you, who do have power, to use the UK’s G7 and COP Presidency in their interests.” Read the letter in full and see the list of signatories here.

Help us share the letter even further on social media. We’ve tweeted about it here if you’d like to re-tweet or write your own post. You can also write your own postcard to the Prime Minister by joining this postcard action our interfaith partners in the Make COP Count group have organised.

Attend the interfaith vigil being streamed from Truro Cathedral tonight

Join faith communities around the UK and the world on the eve of the G7 summit to reflect on how we bring about a just and green recovery from the pandemic for the whole world and send a message to the G7 leaders as they meet in Cornwall.

The interfaith vigil will be livestreamed from Truro Cathedral tonight from 8-9pm BST. You can register to attend here. Speakers will include senior representatives of faith groups in the UK and around the world, people in communities affected by the coronavirus, climate and debt crises globally and young campaigners who are travelling to Cornwall for the G7 summit.

Join the COP26 Coalition’s international press conference and global rally

Our partners at the COP26 Coalition are hosting two important events today. The first is an online international press conference happening now (1-2pm), the second is an online global rally from 7-9pm.

The international press conference will bring together speakers from across the climate justice movement. They will address some of the key themes  of the G7 Summit (Covid-19 vaccines, trade, green recovery and jobs, climate crisis and democracy), highlighting the areas in which we are failing and challenging governments’ empty promises. The conference will also look at what steps must be taken in order to achieve a true green recovery and why the climate crisis and global inequality cannot be solved without solutions based on climate justice. Find out more about the speakers and join here. Sorry this edition is going out a little too late to catch the conference in full!

Don’t worry if you can’t catch the press conference, there will also be a global rally later on this evening bringing together speakers from across social justice movements around the world. The rally will explore multiple forms of apartheid across the globe: from climate to Covid-19 to racism. Apartheid systems mean the rich and powerful are able to escape the impact of the crises that they have caused. Meanwhile, the poorest countries, and the poorest within countries, struggle to survive the catastrophic consequences. What is needed to truly dismantle apartheid in all its forms? Find out more and register here.

Quakers in Britain have also signed the COP26 Coalition’s powerful statement outlining what the G7 must do if they are serious about wanting to lead a “global recovery while strengthening our resilience against future pandemics”. Signatures to the statement have now closed but you can read the full statement here. To make sure you are the first to know about future opportunities organised by the COP26 Coalition, you can also sign up for their newsletter at the bottom of the homepage of their website.

If you take action this weekend, let us know and send us your photos!

We’d love to hear from you if you take action over the G7 Summit. Write to us at climatejustice@quaker.org.uk to share your stories and any photos you take :)

Our wonderful colleagues have put together this helpful guide to taking photos of actions. We’re actively trying to collect more photographs of Quakers to reflect the work of our Yearly Meeting through the lenses of Friends. If you have a camera or a smartphone why not join us to build a bank of images? The best images will be used on our website and for other publicity  – and we are of course happy to credit you if we use your photos.
