Picture“Have we packed our lives with such a frantic pace in search of elusive happiness that God cannot get a word in edgewise?”

This question hit me pretty hard when I ran across it yesterday because I’ve noticed over this past week that I get more than a little antsy without some kind of constant distraction. And I don’t think I’m atypical in that sense. Many of us have experienced those moments in life when we find ourselves scrolling mindlessly through FB or Twitter, or when we wander from room to room in our house looking for things to do because we can’t let ourselves be alone (and quiet!) with our thoughts.

Makes you wonder why that is.

St. Augustine famously said (and I’ve quoted about a million times) that our hearts are restless until they rest in God. But in our frantic search for happiness, are we allowing ourselves to recognize that fact? Are we taking the time to admit to ourselves that nothing we can do can ultimately satisfy the ache in our hearts?

Summer tends to be a busy time, full of nights grilling, splash pad adventures with the kids, and time catching up with old friends. In the midst of all of that, though, I think it’s worth taking a moment to pause, to really look at ourselves and ask what God might be saying in the silence. You might be surprised by what you learn.

YOUNG ADULTS AT EMMANUEL
Summer is in full swing at Emmanuel, and the first young adults event is only about a week away! On June 18th, join Marisa and Trent at their home for a meal, good ol’ Christian fellowship, and a brief discussion on St. Ignatius’ examen. The night begins at 6 p.m. and will run until 8. Get in touch with Marisa for more details and to RSVP!

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
Want to help feed local households? Sign up by June 15 for our 2-week Meals On Wheels ministry in July. For the weeks of July 16 and 23, we're looking for both a driver and a runner each day. The process takes about an hour total. Contact Deacon Chris to learn more!

48 HOURS OF PEACE
On Friday June 25 from 6 - 7 p.m.  in Douglass Park there will be a multi-faith prayer service for peace in the Champaign-Urbana communities. Following the service there will be a reception in the park pavilion. Deacon Chris is co-chair of that reception and could use volunteers to help with set up, serving and clean up. Please contact her if you would be willing to assist.

JESUS' LOVE AT MASS
In 2020-2021, some Emmanuelites have gone without Holy Communion for months; to help us reawaken love for Jesus in the Eucharist, our summer book this year, by noted spiritual writer Henri Nouwen, is With Burning Hearts, which can be purchased online wherever you normally get your books. Want Emmanuel to place an order for you? Please let Mary know by Friday, June 18th.

GOT GRATITUDE?
We will not designate one Sunday for an in-person United Thank Offering this year, but if you are grateful and would like to express that by participating in the UTO process, you may give anytime this summer via your Breeze app or on our website or by mailing a check to the church. However you give, be sure to indicate UTO in the memo line or comment field!

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR THE 12TH BISHOP
The Election Committee for the Twelfth Bishop is pleased to announce that the Diocesan Profile  is now available, and the Nomination and Application processes  are open for use. The Episcopal Diocese of Springfield now invites qualified candidates to discern whether God may be calling them to serve the church of Jesus Christ as the 12th Bishop of Springfield.  The Diocese also invites all its members to dedicate time in prayer with the intention that God will send us a faithful and effective Bishop. Emmanuel invites you in particular to thank our parishioner Bill Techau, who served on the Profile Committee.

IN A PASTORAL EMERGENCY - If you or a family member are in the hospital or have another personal emergency, please let the clergy know; they are ready to visit or assist. If the office is closed, please leave the information (including which hospital) in one of their personal office voicemail boxes or on a home phone. Emmanuel can also arrange to have meals provided; just ask!

SCHEDULE INFORMATION -
Emmanuel's ministry staff seek health for both themselves and the parish culture by taking regular time off. MOTHER BETH is off on Fridays. MARISA CROFTS is off on Mondays. DEACON CHRIS is in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Voice mail may be left in their boxes at any time.

OFFICE HOURS -
The church office is open roughly 9-11 weekday mornings currently, as well as by appointment. At other times our staff will continue fulfilling all their ministry responsibilities from home, including actively responding to email and phone messages.
